hey all, ain't got a taco, but it's gonna happen soon...
wanna know what you all think (opinions/experiences)

I mostly highway drive, I want to be able to tow/haul.
I believe that 1 cubic yard of dirt, is what they refer
to as a bucket load and weighs around-about 1 ton.
until I get a trailer, i have to used the pickup bed.

living in Texas, AC is a must have, so trouble free,
    as can be.

I want a manual, but my wife wants automatic
    4dr 2wd is what I'm thinking i can afford
but what generation and which package
    thats why i came here

    4 cyl or 6 cyl ?
    which 4cyl, which 6cyl ?
    which suspension package?

    a 1980 22r 4 speed manual RV, that's my toyota
expeprience. Years of always wanting/hunting for
    a 5th gear and 30 more mph.

    advice/bewares welcome

I do like the 1st gens, heck I like em all, but
is this year model better than that year model..?
first year gens can be a tire kicking experience, and,
who doesn't want to avoid that?

I am looking forward to my purchase, I also own
a geo metro and I'm not afraid to drive the distance
to get the tacoma I want,, which would indicate initially
the tacoma you all direct me towards should at least
be capable of towing the metro up/down and all around

    PS found a 2016 for 17k listed as a v6, assuming there
is more than oen v6 option which part of the VIN
do I want to pay attention to

how true, but, as I am familiar with the integrity and reliability of the 2.4l
I have no idea of the worthiness of the 2.7L or the 3.4L, obviously they
both have more power, but how are the dependability of those other engines
    or even the 3.5L.
last I heard toyota didnt make a v6 that anyone wanted..now I hear
that might not be the case

    I’ll answer in haiku

    If you want to tow
    A V6 will work better
    Stick shift for the win.

    appreciate that.
    really leaning towards v6,
when I look at the options I am seeing
1st gen has the 3.4L and 2nd gen has 4.0L
and I got all excited when I saw 1st gen has a 5spd manual
then I saw the 6spd manual with the 2nd gens...
geeze I am all a flutter with excitement..

I still have lots to research, just thought I might get some opinions
I heard the 3.4L will be the only thing besides cock roaches
at the worlds end...haven't heard anything about 4.0 other than 't
    they aren't bad.
nothing at all about the transmission stick or auto..is that 6th gear
on a stick and nice as I've always thought a 5th gear would be on
    my 4spd?
as I mentioned I have much research to do yet before I even go
try to find and touch one..
by then I might have more psecific questions

    Welcome!

    2nd Gen V6. I couldn't be happier.
I have no experience with the 6sp manual, but I am pretty happy with the auto. I can definitely see where one more gear would be nice, but the auto gets the job done for me.

The 3.4 and 4.0 are bullet proof, they both will out live any other part of the truck.

glad to hear that about the 4.0L.
I know my old 22r used to be the bees knees.

PS at this point I am leaning hard towards a
    2011 v6 which is a 4.0L,
It doesn'tseem like Toyota made many significant
modifications to the 2nd gens from this point.

maybe the styling on the front end, but by this
year most of the undercarriage mods had become
standards rather than options..not sure about that
    point though
