194k miles and I only changed the washer about 3 oil changes ago when I bought a case of filters last year

if it don't weep, its ok not to change it
if you like to change it, its ok
if you like to take pics of it, its ok
If you like to dangle it off the mirror, its ok
if you like to play ring toss, its ok

please don't give to children under 5, its a choking hazard

It is a good general practice to replace the crush washer every time but it is not necessary. If you torque the drain plug properly, you can re-use the crush washer many times before it gets distorted and requires replacement. Or if someone cranks down on it hard, it will get distorted and has to be replaced after one use.

Good thing is, there are no wrong answers. If you want to install a new one each time you change the oil, go for it. If you want to replace it only when it needs replacing, go for it. If you don't replace it, even after it starts seeping a little, that's OK too. Read all these posts, & do what suits you best, just be sure you make yourself happy, nobody else matters.

+1 here too, but I make sure I wrap it at the very bottom of the threads so none ever gets up into the engine.

Get a fumoto valve and you never have to think about this

Do you think they quit making them 9 yrs. ago. Everything else is new & improved, except the crush washer, it's the same. Same rules go with it.

Do you have to put in a new crush washer when installing the fumoto valve? Inquiring minds want to know

Nope, the one I had was stuck on there, just screwed my fumoto valve on and it’s never leaked the past 5 years.

Probably not. Although I can say with first hand experience that the washer and drain plug from a 1984 22R is exactly the same as the one on a 2008 1GR-FE.
