We had solar city come and install some panels on our house. The bill is definitely cheaper but PG&E does it kinda funky. For 12 months, you pay the minimum for electricity, in our case, $10.99 or something plus your usual gas usage. On the 12th month, they send you a bill to "true-up" your actual electricity usage vs electricity generation (https://www.pge.com/en_US/business/...-to-read-your-bill/how-to-read-your-bill.page). They basically take how much electricity you used all year and subtract how much you generated. They then bill you the difference to "true-up" your account.

For my house, my parents used to pay $300-400/month in the summer months and closer to $200-300 in the winter. Last year, we paid a $900 "true-up" bill + the 12x $10.99 monthly bills over the 12 months.

Its definitely worth it but if you have PG&E, you gotta remember you have to pay a larger bill at the end of every 12 months.

I got some pretty sweet pics back when I was living in LA. I also got to watch the Tundra tow it across the freeway overpass and travel past my house, so that was pretty sweet. It's on display about a mile or two from home too lol. Gotta find my pictures!

Will they pay you back if you end up negative or just a credit balance?

 

not sure. the system we had installed isnt big enough to worry about that unfortunately. I'm sure whatever solar company you end up using can tell you that information.

 

my cousin got duped by SolarCity, he admits its his own fault for not knowing how many KWh he uses and what is included and necessary. So now his bill is ridiculous and his contract is riddled with things to protect SC. Also their rebate that he received of around 15k they say "usually pays towards the panel" thats how they get the advertised price per month. Instead he used it on renovations for the house. So its a huge mess

I heard some where PG&E charges you retail for usage and pays wholesale for power generated by the panels.
Either way it seems worthwhile in a lot of cases.
