7P Recovery Ring

I saw this the other day and found it interesting, so I thought I would share.

It’s a metal ring and a soft shackle that takes the place of a traditional snatch block when using synthetic winch rope.

Interesting but not much info about it.

 

Low friction rings and soft shackles are common place on sail boats as is Dyneema line. Tremendous load forces in those applications especially on large racing class yachts. Typically stronger than their pulley type counterparts, and with a little practice and a set of fids you can make a soft shackle in minutes. Light weight, strong, packable and have multiple uses. Seems like a no brainer to me.

 

Are you going to test one out for us OP?

 

I talked with 7P at overland expo about recovery quite a bit. They don't even touch automotive market snatch blocks. They said they haven't found a single one properly designed for synthetic line. They said some labeled "for synthetic line only" have a proper pulley material but the pulley grove is still too rounded (for steel line). Synthetic line grooves should be flatter since the syn line flattens under tension.

If they use snatch blocks they use arborist blocks. they also use these rings which one of the guys thought up and designed recently. even the smallest one is rated to like 7k lbs and weighs like 1 pound. Allows multi use of your recovery kit components to slim down the load out versus having dedicated kit for each application.

They are truly brilliant. Much ligher and easier to pack, and more versatile than snatch blocks. Considering you (should) already have soft shackles in your kit, this means adding 1-2 lb compact aluminum ring(s) instead of 5-10lb steel snatch block, or even the 3-5lb all aluminum arborist snatch blocks they use.

 

I sat down with Andy of 7P chat about these and we did a full line pull. It's not really a review, but more of a walk through since there is so little info on these still.
We're spending a year driving to South America and decided to use 2 of these to replace our older Arborist style aluminum pulley blocks.

Are they available for sale yet?

 

I know that every one including demos sold out at Expo, but I'd hope they have some more on the way. I'd shoot an email to 7P. (I'll do the same and repost if I hear back. We're heading back out camping after a night at a hotel so I may not have service for a few days)

Shipping wouldn’t calculate on their site, said you have to call for shipping rates. Still may do this too

 

Shipping quote worked for me last week, I think it was like $40. For 2 snatch rings, 3 soft shackles and 3 other small items. Seemed very reasonable.

 

I am super thrilled about this concept.... but: those prices are ridiculous. $185 each and $99 for a single soft shackle? wow.
