I've been seriously considering submitting my flight packet and going Army Aviation. I'm about to pin on 1LT and am branch qualified as a Quartermaster. Anyone have any experience transferring to aviation and going through flight school as anything other than a fresh 2LT? Specifically with the National Guard. Thanks!

It’s not any better than what you do now and means you’ll be stuck in for about another eight years after you get the transfer approved.

You’re a breath of fresh air. I’m not miserable, I’d just much rather fly and by no means would I feel stuck serving.

Just giving you a realistic look at it from the inside. It’s still the Army with all the same BS. The flying (when you get to do it, which is not often) is fun but as an officer that won’t be anything close to your primary duty or focus. Look into switching over to a warrant officer if your goal is to be a pilot.

not the worst advice, pending on your true desire ^^^ (fly or stay commissioned officer). IDK if crazysccrmd is a WO or OFF, but im a CPT with 7 yrs in. I am currently getting out. If I were going to stay in (like I originally thought) I should have transitioned WO after my PL time. Did 26 months PL (not common at all, I was lucky and there were other reasons; I was able to run the company essentially). Did BN staff for 6 months, went to the Infantry cpt career course, did grad school in conjunction with it before PCSing to Lewis.2 deployments to AFG were in there somewhere. PM me if you want my full take and advice. If crazysscrmd is a WO, itll be good to get both sides of the spectrum. I'll go into more detail through PM. I can also only speak on the active duty side of things.

I’m a prior enlisted warrant and might be a little salty. The bolded statement is true for probably 75% of the LTs I’ve worked with though. I’ve seen a lot of them come into the job young and naive and get crushed by the realization that flying is not their job like they thought it would be.

yea, i dont necessarily disagree with you, but I have learned and seen that SOME of that has to do with the culture of the CO and BN and the SPs that go along with both echelons.
I was fortunate bc I worked my ass off as a PL and it showed, flew decent amount, PC as a 1LT on first deployment (not as a PCS gift haha), continue flying PC in the states and helped the company once I moved up to staff (flew more at staff stateside than a PL stateside actually haha, helping progress upcoming PCs, good experience!) but I was dedicated to both sides of the aviation coin, worked HARD at both, and proved my worth. Those showing up thinking they are just going to fly and help make the flight schedule will be blind sided and hate their life choice.
