Architect says it should be in planning by the end of the month. His stuff gets a little extra priority through planning, so hopefully it'll be sooner than later. Nights are already starting to get a little cold.

Of course spec house will also be rolling at the same pace.

8ft bed/camper would be more room but a single cab won't due for work. Biggest thing i want to add to a camper is an indoor shower since most small ones don't have them. And i don't want a camper that hangs over and out past the tail lights. But it's going to be tight.

The issue is the same as it always comes back... I can't see paying more money for a less spacious, less powerful, less fuel efficient vehicle. Almost any full size truck will win all of the categories for what I need. On my long trip, full size power and space would've been sooo nice. And the only places i wouldn't have driven would've just saved me time, pin stripes, and some sketchy situations.

I am always exploring trails but I'm quickly getting over and avoiding anything that requires driving somewhat slow and bouncing over rocks, or very narrow stuff for my size vehicle..which is where the dirt bike will come in for exploring. I went down to do Black Bear Pass and that was a big part of why i didn't feel like driving it when i was at the top...i knew it was doable with a spotter but i was over the draw to do it. And yeah it was doable, but i was the spotter. Haha




Biggest downside is aftermarket support. But...the closer to stock it is, the more reliable it will likely be. 08+ Silverados have mid and long travel kits, which is one of the main areas I don't want to skimp. Mid travel on 35s should keep me happy for all the dirt traveling it'll see. I'd be fine with an early 2000s pickup but the newer you get, the better tow rating for the 1500s, so we'll see. I'm leaning towards the 08-13s to split the difference...less expensive, should haul what i want and be somewhat newer. I'll be figuring it out in the next few months.

 

Might want to consider an outdoor shower. I thought long and hard about the indoor type but in the end I decided the moisture/condensation that the inside shower would create would be more trouble than it was worth.
Especially if you are going with a pop up camper, it's the canvas material that starts to mold.
The four wheel campers sell more of the outdoor shower kits than the indoor.
And most campers will hang out past the bed anyway. Unless you go with 8' bed and a short body camper. The you have to run the risk of some asshole shutting the tail gate on you. But you should have an emergency exit out the side window or top anyway.

 

Gotta say, having sold my built, DCLB camper in favor of a diesel, crew cab long bed Ram with a camper, I’m not sure I could ever go back. The power, comfort, and MPGs of the full size are just too appealing. When we finish our trip, I’ll probably swap out the hard side for a pop top for regular camping purposes.

I think I’d rather explore off-road on an MTB or dirt bike than bounce along slowly in a truck.

 

Yeah, when i was driving up the Champion Mill trail, i was driving pretty slowly due to the trail and a hiker was coming down. It hit me that he's seeing so much more, being active and going faster. I parked and began hiking at the next spot for the truck. So I'll be huffing it on foot more, especially when i hit stuff that's slower than hiking speed.

Probably not waiting until next year to swap out the truck, so that'll likely happen before year end. It'll cost...but I can't change that and at least it's less of a hit than the last vehicle change.

Engineer is finally done with the two or three weeks it took to put my name on someone else's plans, so I'll be going to the building department tomorrow to get in that line of waiting.

 

Plans submitted to county.. Who told me i was the lucky one and get to donate a good chunk more money to Hartsel Fire... Who is the only one in the area who charges and requires a receipt (also not one who would respond if i needed them). So what I hear is ...we want a handout as well. But at least 5-8 weeks wait with the county. So, we'll be in cold weather by then, we'll see if the weather cooperates or if the ground freezes before i can get the foundation in.

Had a little vacation over the holiday and came back to snow on the mountains above 12k or so that lasted a few days.

Cool temps and funny weather patterns make for great sky views. The other night I looked up and it was insane how many stars you could see, a usual thing, but not usually up at 2am or whenever it was.

And since the cold weather is coming, I remembered that I had a gallon of bedliner that I still haven't put on the tundra. I bought it when i got it, but it was always too cold, then i didn't want to remove the decked drawers. So i pulled them last night and did that today.

I used a Duplicolor kit, didn't stir it well enough the first coat, second was fine but main issue was the roller they provided had a very short nap, so it was pretty much useless on anything that wasn't flat. The ribs on the floor it didn't even work well, so the end texture looks like crap imo since it was a combo of rolling and brushing.





Still wanting to find a DD to run around in to keep some miles off this for when it gets swapped out. 69-70 beetles are hard to find, but still searching.

 

Well...since the house stuff looks like the county will wait until after the temps drop and ground freezes to issue my permit, i needed a project.



74 super beetle. Decently clean, not too much rust, modded engine and the stock engine. It was built to daily drive on the highway and carve the canyons.

I don't plan on dumping too much money into it, but clean it up a bit, get it running great again, fix an oil leak, give it an inexpensive paint job and likely keep an eye out for a classic that i can drop the spare engine into.

 

Put the body on a RZR.

 

Haha, that'd slightly defeat the budget build.. Maybe next time.

 

Engine stand ordered, looking for a floor jack.

I think I'll be trying out some of the roll on paint to get it looking better. It's a budget build so I'm trying to stick to that... Most of the window seals are painted or pretty old so I'll just have to do what i can and only be replacing them if they leak.

Probably do a single color for ease of the paint job. Colors i like will be:
Dark green
Cement grey
Dark blue
Cream
