So my engine overheated and seized and has a blown head gasket and I took it in to the dealership and they said that the heads need to be taken to their machine shop to be fixed and they want to charge $5,000 for all the fixes. So I was wondering if I should send it to the machine shop or just do an engine swap with something else? Thanks in advanced

2nd that. I put a JDM engine in my 2001 4runner a couple years ago and it's been running like a champ since. Get a buddy and work on it for 2 days

Used engine for sure, there's a lot of headaches with overheating and repairs.

I've seen many tear downs result in an engine swap. It's just not worth it unless its a hard to source engine (like the new 3.5's) but yours is readily available, I bet for 1500$ you can get a good low mileage.

If I was to swap an engine in what could or should I go with? I haven’t seen to many engine swaps in second gens.

We mean direct, 4.0 to 4.0. The 4runners and FJ cruisers were made in Japan and supposedly have better durability and are more desirable.
