Fiance and I are going to take a trip up the CA coast and would like to get a trailer so we can make these trips a handful of times a year.

Can my Taco safely pull a trailer like this one:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-2018-J...m570.l1313.TR2.TRC0.A0.H0.Xjayco+feather.TRS0

Or is the weight too much to ask? I know it's within limits as a dry weight, but with added weight from water and supplies it might be getting close.

Anybody have experience pulling a trailer this size? Should I be looking smaller?

You're asking more than one question. It will pull it and it might even be safe. It won't necessarily be comfortable pulling it uphill, into wind, on Interstate and doing it all the time may wear out your truck faster. Just my opinion, but that size trailer says full size truck to me.

IMO you are going to be too heavy once loaded up.Weight and wind resistance are going to keep that 3.5 screaming.

I am in the market for an RV to pull with my taco. I currently have a tent trailer ~2700lbs dry. I am looking for something in the 18-21ft range, under 4k dry. preferrably ~3500lbs. Towing at max capacity on any vehicle can be a white knuckle experience. The way the AT handles hills hauling my current trailer, I would not want to be towing max capacity. Remember you need to allow for all your gear and passengers between the truck and trailer to when figuring your weight.

PS Jayco are hot garbage. Do lots of research before buying one.

Trailer at 5,000 pounds plus camping stuff is too much imo. I've done a few short hauls (5-10 miles) with 1-1.5 yards of sand and or rock plus tandem trailer and it feels like the truck struggles too much. That's maybe 5500 lbs.

Way to big of a trailer. Your will have the tail wagging the dog if you try to pull it, when conditions get bad and your in a strong cross breeze

It's within your specs, but something smaller and more aerodynamic would be a lot easier and more comfortable to pull.

Negative man , this engine is a slightly modified small displacement car engine. It struggles to move the weight of the vehicle and as someone mentioned you will need to work it incredibly hard to tow something like that.

Looking at a travel trailer myself and I think ~4000# is probably the sweet spot in getting decent size/layout without overdoing it. The tandem axles I think will help it pull easier and straighter, but you'll still obviously need brake controller, weight distributing hitch, and sway control (which will probably be part of the WDH). As others have said you probably don't want to push right up into the max tow capacity. Give yourself some breathing room for people, equipment, and other payload.

Right now my favorites are the Coachmen Apex Nano 208BHS and Winnebago Micro Minnie 2306BHS, though the Winnebago is pushing over that weight a bit. Because of that (and reading about the Azdel), I'm leaning more towards the Apex Nano.

That was 5,500 lbs, pull it for about 35 miles...it pulled it but it wasn’t easy on the truck, coming to a stop was sketchy at times, it struggled big time at take off once it got up to speed it wasn’t too bad but I def would not want to be pulling that kind of weight on a long haul...need a full size for all that

    Lulz...trailer brakes.

Properly setup trailer brakes don’t put any extra strain on the tow vehicle when stopping. Don’t comment on something you clearly have no idea about.

    This.

OP is bumping right up against the max tow rating once gear and people are factored in. I’d opt for a slightly smaller trailer that will be more comfortable to pull.

Toyota has been SAE J2807 compliant for years and would be out of their mind in our litigious society to rate a truck above what it can safely pull.

It’s not going to pull like a new 1-ton diesel but it wasn’t that long ago that towing with 300hp/300tq was the norm and not everybody felt the need to tow at 80mph through the mountains. 350 Chevy’s of the 90’s were around 255hp and 330tq and worked just fine mated to the 4sp 4L60E.

Dont forget to add the weight of you and your passengers, your weight distribution hitch, your gear in your truck and any mods you did (upgraded tires, wheels, armor and bumpers) to that 5000 lbs.

We have a smaller Jayco (175rd @ 3000lbs) that our 2017 V6 Taco pulls just fine.

Did you have any additional safety measures installed like a brake controller, weight distribution, or sway bar?

I'm thinking I will look for something that is around 3500 lb dry

Definately get a brake controller and a weight distribution hitch.

I’m not even sure if I’d want to pull that with my Tundra, but I’m very conservative when it comes to towing.

But no fucking way should you pull that with a Tacoma.

Let me guess, you think the 4.0 would pull it with ease but this darn minivan engine just cant muster the courage!
