So, this isn't the answer to your question, but I've had a similar thought. I've had a really good experience with Gaia and would like to keep it and all my tracks. Personally, I'm going to be doing some testing with running an Android x86 virtual machine on my laptop with a gps receiver of some sort. The trouble with that is going through the needle-in-haystack-esque search for proper drivers and setup. That'd be a way, in theory, to use Gaia on PC; it just might turn out to be long and convoluted on the front-end.

I've read some reviews on PC mapping software (like Map Pro) that will plug and play with a usb gps dongle. Some will also accept .kml or .kmz files and some dongles will work with Google Earth even. Having one app for all devices is preferred and I do like and use Gaia, but I've not seen any other interfaces that look particularly user friendly while on the road or off. Gaia's map layers is a big selling point for me. As of now Gaia has no plans to develop a PC app, but would consider it with enough interest. Be interested to see how your idea progresses. If it works, count me in as a silent partner and we can retire.

    Yeah.
Google Earth (the paid version) does support connecting a GPS device to it. What I am not clear on is whether it loads maps locally or requires an internet connection. Google Maps allows you to load an area for offline navigation as well. It looks like Gaia supports some external GPS devices.

I have an older Android tablet I'd like to play with, need to find it.

I've been looking for a notebook with a GPS receiver that could run Gaia. I have no experience with Gaia but I've watched several videos on YouTube and it looks very useful with some experience.

    Yeah.
I was running Gaia on my phone when we did the Ouachita freeze trip, I thought it was going to catch on fire it got so hot. Plus it didn't always seem to be working, so my first impression was not very good.

Problems with Gaia can be as much about the device and the chipset as the software. Its been quirky for me at times but has never lost me or gotten me lost.

I think Google Earth Pro is free now if that's the version you're referring to, or maybe I caught them on a generous weekend.

I know iPad has GPS chipsets, but Nexus Pads are reasonably priced, like 70 bucks if I recall, and some models have GPS chips in them. I cant justify another device just for that, so I'm looking to add a dongle to what I have with some decent software. I personally like the Gaia mobile interface, so I'm petitioning them to hurry up and put out a PC app.

Ok, so I did some research and yes you can cache parts of the Google Earth maps before you go so you don't have to have an internet connection. Just have to max out the cache size in Google Earth and you'll be limited by that. Not sure how large a map can be, but I'm trying it. Also trying Goops plug in that will work with most NMEA GPSs via bluetooth and will real time your location onto the cached map. If you import .kml or .kmz tracks/routes ahead of time, Goops will simply be a location track overlay.

I recently picked up a couple cheapo 22" quad row light bars from China. Not bad considering I bought the pair for a total of like $45; so, who cares if they don't throw that far. My sheet metal friend helped me fab up the brackets last night, and I finished the wiring on my lunch break (hence the engine-warmed steak-n-shake).

We'll see what they look like tonight. ^_^

    Anybody familiar with Fayetteville:
My brother is starting his first year at UofA this year. I went to Tech in Russellville, so I don't have much experience with Fayetteville. Can anybody give me some ideas of some good things to do around there for young college kids? Things that he might not find out about on his own. He's not like me at all and doesn't do much outdoors. I'm just trying to help him not be bored and get in trouble.
    Thanks!

He will find many opportunities to join clubs and get involved with the school. He will have to seek it out though, it’s not a small school and is easy to be the type of person to sit inside and do nothing (my freshman year roommate). Tell him to make sure and go to the event where they set up all the clubs at the beginning of the year. That’s one of the best ways to find groups to join. As far as things to do around town not affiliated with the school, I do lots of outdoor activities so that’s about all I can offer.

Not new to the forum but new to this thread. From North Central Arkansas. Anyone close I would like to get out and meet y'all. 4 Toyota trucks in my lifetime. First was a 85 sr5 pick up, 96 Tacoma single cab 3.4 5spd, 2009 Tacoma access cab 4 cyl 5 spd, and now my 2012 TRD Sport double cab. That's the best pic I have of the Tacoma I have now. Nothing done to it really. Painted my wifes stock 4runner wheels and some pro comp tires. Looking to further mod it. Any suggestions on a mild lift? Maybe just an 1.5 or so?

Welcome Bean. We try to get out as often as we can, but then again I'm relative new comer to TW too, but not to Toyotas. Stay tuned to the thread, I'm sure we'll be doing some fall trips and some are going to Rendevous in the Ozarks ( https://www.naturalstateoverland.org/rendezvous-in-the-ozarks-info) as well, which is a good meet and greet for Arkansas folks. As far as the lift goes, many run Bilsteins 5100's on their Tacomas, lots of options out there. I just added the Eibach leveling kit (Pro Truck) a few weeks back and just installed the AALs from Wheeler Off Road this weekend. Leveled it right out and I like how it looks. 2.5 or so on front, and about 1.5 or so in the back. Pic of my truck before AALs went on (post 3351) a page back. Glad to have you aboard, and look forward to doing some weekend runs this fall when the bugs and humidity go away.

Right on. I also have a dual sport, didn't know if anyone else on this thread might be into that too? TerraNerva was looking on eibachs website and did you get the pro truck kit with springs and struts? If you don't mind me asking how much that ran? Its not listed on their site.

 Zach....adjustable Bilsteins up front and AAL on the back is how I started. Now on OME and got 2.5" all around so that's where I'm at.

So, N. Central AR - Clinton, Harrison, Jasper??? Bet you could show us some pretty good trails up that way. Looking forward to it....

    Yeah.
Love that '85! I've had a '92, '04, '09, '12 and now an '18. Had an '03 Matrix and '06 Tundra mixed in there as well.

I'm relatively new to the area (just hit 1 year) but have been on a couple of trips with the crew here. Great bunch of guys, and Chip and Pete know their way around. Looking forward to some fall trips! Took a short cut back from the drive-thru safari (near Gentry) over the weekend and got to see some gravel at least.

    Chip, post some pics!

I got my bed stiffeners and breather relo done. I think it's time to do some photos and start a build thread. Already have a name picked out.

Oh, and I bought my youngest daughter a used Corolla S. Neat little car. I have now successfully raised 2 daughters to adulthood. Now to get them through school so they can start supporting themselves.

I picked up the entire kit from tirerack, including coilovers , springs and rear shocks for just under 5 bills, I'd have to look back for exact price. Not a terrible install, but some pucker factor with the spring compressor. The Wheeler AAL was about 100 with shipping. The Bilstein 5100 kit comes with the same Eibach coil springs, and I read somewhere the 5100s were just re-branded Eibachs. I'll give them a good workout in Colorado next week and report back on how they do.

I think my next piece of equipment needs to be some CB comms. Having some communication throughout a convoy has got to make everything smoother on these trips. And CB seems pretty common in Arkansas among the wheeling folk.
