 It's a pretty cheap upgrade. @MatthewMay1 helped me work my way through deciding what to get. He recommended going minimal, but something with RF gain. I wanted something small, so I went with a Uniden Pro 520XL and am very happy with it. I opted to buy my own SWM meter so I could get the antenna tuned properly.

I got mine through RightChannelRadios, good guys, but be careful what you order. Their add-a-circuit fuse kit has the huge fuses and will not work on a Tacoma, best to just hit your local auto parts store and get one that fits. And the FireRing cables no longer come with the bolt that you need, so you'll have to pick one up from the hardware store if you use that kind of cable.

And thanks for your tip on the breather relo, worked great behind the left tail light!

@TenBeers That does look like a neat little radio. I'll have to figure out where I want to mount the antenna. Probably could affix it to my ditch light bracket easy enough.

That's the one. Ride is improved over stock, for sure, but with AAL truck definitely rides stiffer now. I like it, I haven't tested it offroad yet, but on road is good after about 1000 miles.

    I bought this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000X3EQ3G/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I mounted passenger side tailgate top between tail light and tailgate and ran wire behind tail light down through frame and up through rubber grommet under cab. That mount is really versatile, and I needed it to clear my RTT. I added a 4' firestik firefly and is working good so far tuned in to about 1.5. Dave's is mounted in a similar location, but he has a 5' firestik we tuned yesterday and it metered in barely over 1. There was a thread on here using same bracket and install but I can't find it.

My firestik is 4’, mounted in the sample spot as Chip’s but on the driver’s side. I had a lot of issues with a 3’ firefly/cheap coax cable, but since I upgraded the cable and went with the 4’ firestik it’s been great. Even with a soft topper frame there to interfere with things.

Speaking of soft toppers! Anybody interested in a well used, but functional one? Tan in color. For first gen, long bed.

Same bracket as I used on the driver side, but I did have to put it in a vise and give it a slight bend so it wouldn't rub the tailgate. I just ran the wire through the gap between tailgate and bed side and down through a hole I drilled in the bed. Also ran an additional ground wire down to a bolt on the frame. The 18' Firestik cable made it far enough to install the radio under the left side of the dash, but not enough length to do a console install. With a DCLB, it will be tight. If you already have ditch lights, though, going with a 9' cable should be plenty. I highly recommend the FireRing cable to avoid a big cable loop (and might be necessary for clearance at the ditch light location), but like I said, you gotta supply your own bolt. My 4' tuned in to about 1.3 - 1.4.

Dave, does that antenna location interfere with the opening of the back of your softopper any?

I mounted my antenna with the 90º adjustable hood hinge mount in the tailgate jam. 102" whip antenna tied down above the rear door. Really wish my radio had adjustable RF gain, because I get a lot of interference with that antenna sometimes. I think it receives too well for the radio I have.

It doesn't block access to anything, but you will be reaching around it to open/close the softopper. Here's the only photo I have on hand with a decent angle so you can see what I mean. I can get a close up later today if you want. I've never thought of it as an issue.
