Noise is still in the diffs on 18's as people are reporting. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...hering-throttle.442341/page-227#post-18354148
Hoods still come unglued on 18's. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/hood-vibrating.402060/page-53#post-18365736
You know brake lights are still leaking due to a imo bad design.
Lets talk about the plastic fan ? Fixed in 2018 ?
A leak can happen on any year in any area. It's not like its over.
A vehicle is going to have issues come up no matter what year. You think 2017 was the golden no problem again year ?
Bottom line it's a solid truck and small things will come up.

Has anyone even noticed that the OP hasn’t even commented back about this situation???

Maybe he has already ran his new Colorado off a cliff when he realized he made a horrible mistake??? Just sayin.

We are doing an awful lot of back and forth crazy talk and he is either trolling or buying his piece of crap Chevy. Lol. Weeeeeeeeee!!!

I get 18mpg in a TRD OR with a 2.5” lift and 33” e-rated tires (heavy), with steel sliders and a winch up front (also heavy). I don’t baby it either. That’s not 28mpg, but it’s not terrible.

I also tow a 4,500lb travel trailer (when it’s loaded). It’s not awesome towing, but it does the job. A full-size would be better, but I wouldn’t trade the Taco for a Colorado.

I tow maybe 2% of the miles I put on the truck, so I’m happy with what I have for that purpose.

Just providing some data points that hopefully might help.

Dude, reread my post. Still problems, not as many. Always less problems as the model get older. I do this for a living.

I don't think you by waiting til 17 did an exponential reduction in problem reduction. 1st year 2005 frame rust in 2nd gen was discovered in 2006 ? Guess again. Look it up. Cost them billions. As it got older, it got rustier. You never know.

After owning a few diesels, I thinking buying a diesel is an expensive way to save money

There are good reasons to buy a diesel, but money isn’t one

Call me a hipster but I've made the switch to raw denim, specifically Brave Star Selvage. If you get the Cone Mills stuff it is made 100% in the US, down to the rivets. Plus they start real dark, which I like, then fade out with wear. Just can't run them through the wash or they will get all weird looking. Anyways, back to the discussion.

I picked the Tacoma over the Colorado and IMO if you plan on towing a lot it's probably best to consider a full size option.

Having a 2017 I do not have the issues many of the 2016s did. I had some issues but minor.

The vast majority of issues were posted by those with 2016s. That’s not exactly a perfect pie chart of reality but it’s still a measurable metric.

There actually was a Frame Change for the good early on in the 2nd Gens, however it had nothing to do with rust but was for reinforcing the motor mounts that were collapsing.

People just don't understand. There are around 5500-6000 parts that make up the assembly drawing and BOM called Tacoma. There have been many revisions to some of those parts. I would easily think 500 or so. In addition, there have been many process changes, like how much glue, torque on arm rest screw, etc.
Once a drawing is done is when the real work begins lol. Revisions, revising revisions and re revising revised revisions...
The engineers don't file the drawings, close the drawer and cross their arms over their chest and dare anyone to make a suggestion. Most of these changes don't change the function or look.

    Hi all

    OP here

Thanks to everybody for the advice.

When I was buying the truck a few months ago, it was down to the taco or the GMC canyon diesel.

I got a great deal on both.

The 2018 OR Taco with tech package, msrp of 37.8k, I bought for 33k plus tax.

I also had an offer for a gmc canyon diesel, msrp of about 41k, could have bought for 36k plus tax.

I chose the taco for the reliability and resale and so far really have no complaints other than the gas mileage being a few mpg worse than advertised. But, I only have 1000 miles, and am sure it will break in.

I thought about the diesel last night because I started doing some research on this forum about towing. Boat will be around 4500 pounds wet on trailer.

I came across so many posters saying the taco can't tow shit, so I thought maybe I should have got the diesel.

But, all these posts in this topic are very reassuring. And there is no being the resale and reliability vs the diesel.

Thanks to all who commented so far.

I just towed 4200lbs for 3600 miles and never thought it was an issue.
Now if I did that ALL the time? I would buy a tundra. That thing is a monster for towing.
For my needs the tacoma can do everything I want. My next trip might be a car/cartrailer for 3600 miles. I wouldn't even worry about it.
