This is on the Delaware River in the Washington's Crossing area. The river is probably at least 4' higher than this right now thanks to all the rain we keep getting. The boat is a Lowe 1652 jet tunnel hull with a Merc 60/45 jet outboard.

Ah nice man! That river must be rolling like ours here in VA! I’ve got a 1754 grizzly with a tiller 60/40. Need to flip her and put in a tunnel and console up front like yours! Keep it skinny!

Yeah, the river is at least 7' above normal for this time of the year. The console was actually mounted farther back when I got the boat. The previous owner was running a 40 hp long shaft prop motor and didn't even realize it was a jet tunnel! I sold that motor for almost the same money I paid for the 60/45 short shaft jet motor. I moved the console forward and put the battery under the console to keep the weight forward. Here's a picture of the river from back in April when we had a lot of rain. It's almost the same now with lots of debris floating down.

a friend has a GM 5.0 inboard engine on his boat that wont idle. It does fine at 1500+RPM just wont idle. Im thinking either a idle jet/orifice is plugged or possibly fuel pump? But I'd think fuel pump wouldnt work at any speed? I did notice there wasnt any fuel that come out of the line when I disconnected the carb. Is that normal or should there have been a little trickle come out? Its a carbuerated NON fuel injected.

Strange. The not running at an idle but at higher RPM's leads me to think that its a bad idle circuit and that the idle orifices are plugged. But no fuel in the line is a mystery, because that should mean it wouldn't run at higher rpms (when it needs more fuel) instead.

The first thing I'd normally do to try and correct the idle issue would be to pull the carb, tear it down, and give it a thorough cleaning (blowing all of the orifices out, the needles, all of it). But the lack of fuel in the line is interesting. Is there no fuel in it immediately after the boat has been running, or if it's been shut down for a while? Because if it's empty when the motor's cold that might just mean that the line is draining back down around the pump (not uncommon when they get a little wear on them). But if it's empty immediately after a shutdown then that's a bigger problem.

What carb does he have on that motor? It could be a vacuum leak somewhere that is throwing off the mixture at idle.

I loosened the line pretty soon after a shutdown, to check the filter right before going into the carb. I thought it was a little odd nothing dripped out. I did get a rebuild kit for it as in typical fashion when you take it apart usually mess up a gasket. Im going to tear it down and clean everything and put the rebuild kit in. Im thinking its a combo of things, dirty carb and maybe a weak fuel pump. I didnt get to look at the fuel pump but its showing an electrical type external fuel pump so it looks easy to change.

Im thinking clogged idle jet also. I looked for anything like a a vacuum hose but theres really nothing on this carb. The pcv valve goes somewhere else and soon as you take that off it does kill the engine. I'll have to get more in depth into it next week. Thanks for the help.

Then it sounds like the pump is about done. It's probably got enough internal wear that it's not pumping enough fuel at an idle. Most inboard boat motors are set up to idle at around 600rpm or so, and if the pump's only pumping at 25% efficiency or whatever then the engine just isn't getting enough fuel until you increase the number of cycles the pump runs in a minute.

Lamesauce. Nothing like a downpour while you're trying to boat.

My only question is low pump pressure going to affect a carb? its not efi or throttle body. Pretty basic system.

It'd be more of a supply issue than a pressure issue. If the carb isn't pumping enough to keep the bowl full then it won't idle right. Kind of like running an impeller-style low efficiency pump at 100 rpm instead of 1000; you don't get much out of it.

a neighbor and myself were talking about this...Im also leaning to a weak fuel pump. Im going over to check it out tomorrow. See what I can come up with I didnt take a look at what type of fuel pump it has so it will be interesting.

Nellie handling the weather well this weekend! On our “relaxing” cruising day, we got blasted with 28mph sustained winds gusting consistently to 35 along with 3ft waves that we had to beat up wind through to get back to the marina. Don’t really have any pics of the white caps or big waves that broke over the bow and sprayed us in the cockpit, only the nice downwind run we had prior (I forgot to pull the motor all the way up in the first pic, we werent running it lol)
