I went through that at my last apartment. Was right on a highway, and they redid the entire stretch through there when I was working twelves (5am to 5:30pm with a 1 hour both ways travel time) I didn't get much sleep with construction equipment 6 feet from my bedroom wall and orange lights flashing through the blinds....

3 hours is not nearly enough, reminds me of when I used to do back to back doubles at my old job. Definitely getting too old to be doing that again.

It's out of everyone's price range. But it makes the other ones seem not so expensive hahaha

I haven't even looked into the others. Does each one just give you more channels(longer distance) you can chat on?

Bingo. Genrel get you the HF frequencies. Those are the world wide bands. It's a little more in depth, but it's kind of like a cook book recipe. There's a few things that'll help you pick which bands to use depending on who you want to talk to. I could easily hit you guys down there with the right HF rig.

Main reason I want one is for safety. Way out in the back country I'd always be able to find someone. Also, it'll make for a nice camp fire hobby when camping in the mountains. Some set ups are really portable

    Gotcha.
Just for hypothetical reasons. Say you had one of those and got lost out in the wilderness. You decide to use it to get help, would you get into any trouble considering you don't have a license.

I've seen questions about station operators and them being able to use frequencies they aren't licensed for in case of human or property emergency.......just didn't know how it would be for your average person.

You could in an emergency. But the problem is since it's a little more in depth to opersop those radios you might not be successful in making contact. That's part of the reason why people hop on the radios to make contscts. For practice and to see where they can reach

Gotcha. I think we're all planning to take the Oct 20th test. That will give me a good month plus to just listen and learn how people communicate.

Do you need. general license to use the Ham sats?

Is there any restrictions with a tech license to use the echolink system?

Per say on freq you can use with that license. Or do they offer anything you can’t use on it?

Main reason I wanted to test before then is a camping trip to use it before the 20th.

Nope. There's a sweet AP you can get to time the satellites over head. I've actually picked up a few. Privileges go by bands. The majority are on 2m and 70cm which are within tech privileges. Btw there's some sweet videos on how to do some DIY antennas that you can mount onto a cheap camera tripod and get way better success with those Birds. It's on my to-do list.

Echolink is also 2m and 70cm.

Might I recommend the Amazon basics tripod. https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics...8-1-spons&keywords=amazon+basics+tripod&psc=1
My wife uses it for her gopro, very adjustable. Should work good for a cheap stand for your DIY antenna.
