I just completed my first oil change on my 2016. I bought used with 10k and now I have 20k and was using the dealer service plan until my freebies ran out. So I am back to doing it myself. Anyway ...

I have read a several pages of the following thread

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/toyota-oil-filter-made-in-thailand-vs-the-competition.123608/

but it is way too long so here is my issue.

I have always used the enclosed style (?) filter in domestic vehicles so this is my first experience with canister (?) style.

After purchasing a STP brand as recommended by AutoZone, I took my old one off (I assume it is OEM since the dealer has done the previous oil changes) and noticed a size difference that I am just not used to seeing ... I have always had the same size enclosed/metal filter case which is the only confirmation I have the required/recommended part.

I was immediately concerned/upset thinking it was the wrong filter entirely. I take it back and show the manager the size difference and they have no explanation. Unconvinced the STP is the correct filter, I run over to O’Reillys and compare with their Wix brand. The size matches perfectly.

Am I wrong to compare the sizes of the filters to make sure I have purchased the correct part. The material of the STP vs Wix did look a little different and the inside of the STP had metal ring with drilled holes vs a mesh in the Wix however I am no filter engineer.

Here are a few pics of the STP vs the Wix ... I didn’t take a photo of the old dirty one but the size matched the Wix exactly.

Finally is warranty an issue to not be using the OEM filter?

    Thanks everyone!

To clarify, I don’t doubt Wix is a good brand ... I am doubting STP and a couple others that were smaller in size as compared to the Wix or the OEM that I took off the truck.
