    G'day all

Sorry for the long post !

Former Taco owner here(old prerunner)..traded it in for my current X5 Diesel and never look back. X5 is now paid off but quickly approaching that 90k miles (no major issues to date!). We had extended warranty that's going out at 90k as well so thinking of trading it in before I run into any expensive bmw repairs. I've had 2 minor repairs that was covered by warranty but it wasn't cheap either!

Over the years as a D owner, I've been totally spoilt by the extremely good gas milege and torgue (my X5 gets me about 25mpg average and I've driven from Sacramento to Portland Oregon on a single tank of diesel!).

But current market, the diesel is only on the Chevy Colarado and GMC Canyon and from what I've read, both are problematic (and resale value is in the toilet).

However, I've missed the Taco over the years (have some sweet memories of my Prerunner) so thinking of picking up a late 2018 TRD Sports end of this year when these get discounted for 2019 models.

Buying time would be approx end Nov or Dec depending on deals/incentives.

The monkey wrench is that I've read that Ford Ranger diesel will be hitting the US market for 2019 but not sure. I'm from New Zealand originally so I go down there/Aussie every year and I've driven the Ranger D a lot (it's been available in the Asia/Pacific market for a while now!). AND Ive also driven the Hilux (Tacoma equivalent) in DIESEL which is a beast!

Is Toyota going to bring the diesel line anytime to US in 2019?

On the same note, any new engine will always be the 'guinea pig' so long term reliability would be a factor. At least with the current old dated V6, it's a proven engine and I usually keep my vehicles around for 7-8 years.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks!

Simple answer would be no! There's always the Chevy Colorado if resale doesn't mean anything to you.

I don't think you will ever see a Tacoma Diesel unless you do an engine swap.

Ranger is not diesel for US market. All reports say it an ecoboost 4cyl with 10spd Auto. One and only powertrain choice

The diesel is not coming to the US anytime soon... The ranger is probably your best bet

thanks all. Really disappointing. Can't believe US gets the shaft for the diesel Tacos :-(.

Guess I'll wait for the Ranger release (and hopefully that drives the Taco prices or creates more incentives in Dec). Cheers!!

It was noted in landcruiser forums that 4runner "may" be getting the turbo diesel engine. (Most likely the GD engine) Sources reported that toyota was sourcing their parts manager from diesel suppliers, but this is word from mouth from a somewhat reliable source.

I'm sure if they were to incorporate in the 4runner, the possibility of it going in the taco is very likely.
    But....

Take it with a grain of salt.

Edit: dont discount the nissan frontier update due in 2019 and also the jeep truck with the diesel later this end of the year.

Tundra was going to get the same Cummins motor as the Nissan Titan. By all accounts that has been killed. Don't expect ANY Toyota diesels to come to US.

Considering the diesel Titan was a complete flop, I can't imagine Toyota venturing into that category.

I don't understand the lust for a midsized diesel. With Diesel emissions, their reliability is garbage. They are great for hauling. Not many people buying midsized purchase for hauling. But I guess the illusion is out there. So we get diesel Tacoma threads every couple days.

Go drive a Colorado or canyon, then a Tacoma.
Coming from the bmw, I think you’ll like the Colorado much more.
The diesel in the Colorado is a proven engine, no issues there.
Reliability? If you’re not keeping the bmw past 90k cause you’re afraid. Both the Colorado and Tacoma will last to those km’s easily without issue.
And it’s 2018, reliability is if you got one built correctly or not. Plenty of stories for both the GMs and Tacoma’s.

Only thing will be resale, but if you go for the diesel Colorado, especially in a zr2 it will hold well, but not Tacoma well

Dont know if this is completely true but their development for the diesel engine with Cummins did not meet the expectations or goals of surpassing the current diesel engine they use globally. No point in just drafting an engine for 2 platforms designated for american trucks.

So, the 4.5L twin turbo V8 1VD-FTV became the global (minus 'merica) corporate engine

The diesel Colorado wouldn't start when the temperature dropped for my next door neighbor. I don't really know how proven that is. Its a common problem.

Probably a diesel issue, not direct towards the Colorado.

Didn’t plug in block heater, didn’t use diesel additives, ran DEF low.
I’ve never heard of this issue. First time and it’s a “my neighbor” story.
The engine is a proven engine, do a little research plz.

Diesel, yeah, ask any diesel owner and you’ll find out the cost of ownership is much more than a gas powered truck, especially mid size.

If you need to tow or haul 10k+ lbs, sure get a diesel, but you’re probably a business so costs get offset to revenue.

It never gets offset if you’re a private owner.

This might piss a lot of people off but a Hybrid might be a better option for a midsize Truck.
