When you disconnect the battery it will shut off once then it will run fine.

Much appreciated; busy restoring my 07' Taco TRD V6 and going though the maintenance now with 120K on the clock. Definitely removing the TB to get the backside as well as farther into the intake works best. As well as removing the MAF which is easy. Two little allen bolts. Lastly, I had an initial high idle at 2K whicb settled down to 1K after a few revs and letting the engine run a little while. Think I'm going to replace the TB O-Ring next to help eliminate some air noise from my K&N CAI. This definitely improved throttle response and low end pick up. Time will tell on the gas mileage. Can't beat this tune up addition for $10 and an hour of time. It was BLACK on the backside of the TB and into the intake. I notices no issues at all from not disconnecting the neg battery terminal.

Also, does anyone know where to get a few replacement plastic spacers for the MAF unit? I lost one that sat on my K&N.

would not think you would need one, just tighten both side equally to get a seal.

I found some online that worked perfectly. Thanks Sockmonkey. Seriously the bed decals I ordered from you WAY back in the day lasted 7 plus years.

So, here's my TB backside after disconnecting it and cleaning it as well as I could. Cleaned as deep inside the intake as I could as well too. It wasn't horribly dirty really. Took about 20 mins to get it done this time. It's definitely MUCH easier to disconnect the TB to get in there and do a better job. Also, just spray the TB cleaner on a rag and then go to it. No need to remove the neg terminal from the battery, and truck starts and runs perfectly now. A very slight increase in idle RPM but it settles after a bit to 700 RPM.

I cleaned out the throttle body according to the instructions. Pretty straightforward and easy to do. I haven't noticed MUCH of a difference yet. I know lots of guys have said they felt like they were driving a new truck after cleaning the TB. I still have a 1-2 sec hesitation off the line. The other day I was driving on the highway and had to pass someone. It was almost like the engine took a 1-2 sec deep breath before accelerating. It's that hesitation that I'm still concerned about.

I cleaned it out on Friday morning. Since then I've driven 220 miles.

I just performed this maintenance and now the check engine light comes on and the truck will not respond when I press the gas pedal but it will go ~ 20 MPH. Any ideas?

I’d disconnect the battery for 10 min and see if it fixes itself.

I just did this again today for the second time on the truck. The 1st was at 48,000 miles
I completed this again today for the 2nd time since owning the truck now with 109,455 miles on the truck. I actually started with an oil change, greased the zerks, changed the cabin&Air filter(found that damn piece of paper that got near the fan blade), then decided to change the plugs and clean the maf and throttle body.

The truck definitely has a smoother puurrrrrr to her now to Tomorrow I’ll have some fun!!! Definitely recommend doing this especially with winter fuels.

thanks for the great write up I used it today on my 190,000 mile 2008 - pretty sure it was the first time it has been done - it still had original spark plugs in it.

Bruh. Nasty throttle body. Didn't know what the big deal was but went ahead anyways. Then discovered the inside of the TB isn't supposed to be black...

No big improvement. Less than 30 minutes to complete.

I have an 06 with just about 180k on it... I'm not sure this has ever been done, at 180k should I just replace the MAF rather than cleaning it? They have the brand new OEM part on Amazon for $70 (was $50 a few weeks ago). I'll be cleaning the TB as well either way, i'm sure it is nasty. If I go new i'll probably wait for the price to drop a bit again anyway as I can't do anything until it warms up a bit.

Do these MAF sensors have a typical life span?

Great tutorial! I just cleaned both throttle body and MAF sensor on my '09 trd sport. Im currently at 78k and both the throttle body and the sensor were pretty dirty! I also replaced the throttle body gasket before putting it all back together. WOW what a difference it made for all around performance. A quieter idle, smoother running engine along with way better pick up. Thank you, TW. This was a great expierence and a gret DYI project.
