Plenty of PB right around the splines, i mean like a lot. Let it sit for a while. I would spray, wait about ten minutes. Did that about three times and then one hit and she was free. The axle will not come all the way out, it will only move back about an inch when it separates from the hub.

Ahhh...i see what you mean. When I saw this post I thought it was an attachment for the slide hammer, which I didnt think would help me. Yeah i will try this tomorrow.

Watch this video it’s pretty much what I did. I don’t recommend hitting on the axle/nut with the hammer directly but he makes it look as easy as it actually is.

Thats a great vid. Basically I did everything exactly the way he did but my dust cap was corroded on there much worse and obviously I havent been able to free the shaft from the external spline even with a 10 lb sledge. Solid video though, better than any of the tacoma specific videos I watched. Will try 3 wrm puller tomorrow.

Just finished the tournament, I’m exhausted.
Dang, this wasn’t any easy job for you. Puller sounds like a good idea. I would recommend anti-seize or at least grease those areas on this set, CV splines especially. I’d definitely take a wire brush to the area on the steering knuckle where the o-ring seats, grease it well too.

Hallelujah...this thing would have never come off without the 3 arm puller. I had to put 2 wrenches on that even. But its off, and surprisingly looks pretty good/clean. Time for breakfast. Hopefully I dont have a lot of problems grtting it back together now (looks at spline).

I cannot stress more highly that you go borrow a slide hammer with flange attachment and 3 arm puller before undertaking this task. It did not have to be this hard. Autozone lets you borrow this equipment for up to 90 days for free (fully refund a deposit). The new bearing assembly went on like butter. Realized my brake rotors are shot (they may have been the original units after 130k miles if that is even possible), so going to replace those while Im at it. Threadjack over.

And torque CV nut to spec is super important for bearing life, get the torque wrench too.

Ive got a large torque wrench, it goes to 160 or 170 ftlbs. But thanks for this final piece of advice. This assembly is super nice, turns smooth. Zero problems getting it on the spline. I greased the spline and o-ring, anti seize on the mating surfaces. Went together nicely.

I might actually recommend the 3 arm. I had a similar looking flange for the slide hammer. It basically didn't really fit (wrong size diameter) I got like a turns worth of thread on two studs. I only proceeded bc I didnt care whether I ruined the thread or not (replacing the part). The 3 arm fit great though.

Thank you. I was trying to make the tools list as concise as possible but it's probably best to just get the puller. I'll change up that list again

And I'm going to change up the links to Auto Zone too, I didn't realize O'Reilley requires us to return the tools within 2 days or we must pay for the tool- I guess I was just lucky and returned the tools quick enough.

Autozone is 90 days. No reason to buy any of the stuff they let you borrow.

I've received a lot of PM from customers asking about installation of the included inner seals, as they're in the installation process- by the time I get around to answering questions they've already buttoned up and don't exchange because they think the seal in place "looks good". How many of you guys are actually installing them? Should I drop the inner seal from the kit for a lower price?

I would rather have the parts on hand and not need them, than need the part and have to wait to get it or run around like a lunatic finding one. Must be the boy scout in me. :anonymous:

I think you should drop it from the kit but make it available as an add on for $XYZ more. I also think people should be replacing the seal anyways because if their bearing is shot, their seal really can’t be in that good of condition.
