Walmart Employee Botches Oil Change After Filling Up Wrong Hole
    August 20th, 2018

    Post Categories
You should always check reviews and references before taking your car into a shop whether its a mom and pop or a Walmart. Because something like filling up the wrong hole during an oil change could end up costing you thousands of dollars.

That's exactly what happened to this Sacramento woman a few years ago. She took her car in for a basic service and the technician who handled it ended up botching the job...big-time. After draining the oil, the technician put the drain plug back in and filled up the engine again. All sounds good except instead of putting the liquid in the correct receptacle, filling up the engine with oil, he poured it in the opening for the transmission fluid. Not even kidding.

The woman says that instead of offering to make things right and paying for the damages, the retail giant stalled getting her a rental car and offered her only $4400 instead of the $7500 that she asked for to repair damages. Talk about making a mess of the whole thing.

I work at a Chevrolet dealer during the day, we just put an engine in a Honda two weeks ago that came from Walmart. Employee double gasketed the oil filter, causing it to leak out the oil and the cam to seize.

Yeah..every time you remove the old filter always make sure the gasket is intact. This happened to me once while doing an oil change. When i started her up i heard oil spraying and sure enough the old gasket was in place. No damage but had to buy more oil.

It can happen to the best of us! Of you dont already know to check it then by the time you realize what's happened it could be too late. Or atleast cause you to buy more oil. If youre lucky

I have never experienced the gasket not coming off with filter. Is the result of it coming off the filter do to over tighting?

It can be that, in my experience it's mostly from not lubing the gasket with fresh oil before installing but over tightening can do it too!

Yeah I always add a lil bit of the lube on the seal and usually just hand tighten the filter with like a half turn with a wrench.

Yup, that's what I did..sometimes you get a faulty one. Always ALWAYS check for the gasket.

Though I wouldn't personally allow a Walmart "technician" to lay a hand on my vehicle.....I know lots of people who've had oil changes done there for years without incident.

Had one of those quick change place botch the wife's car many years ago. They topped off the brake fluid with the wrong shit ruining the entire brake system. Thank God I kept the receipt showing they had added brake fluid. That cost them a pretty penny.

My neighbor just had an engine rebuilt after an oil change, drain plug was loose and the oil drained out over a few days.

I worked with a woman who had the wrong oil filter installed on her mini-van, costing the fast lube place the cost of a new engine.

I know this is an old thread but I fixed an oil “leak” on my ‘04 two weeks ago. Just got the truck in April and one of the things that prompted me to buy it was the dozens of receipts the PO had for oil changes from various places, the last of which was from about a month before I was buying the truck and there was only 40 miles put on the truck since that last oil change.
Flash forward... A few weeks back I noticed that the truck was leaving a few drops of oil on the garage floor so I degreased the pan and discovered the drain plug was leaking and even better, there was blue permatex around the plug that I missed seeing before I bought it. So I just knew (assumed the worst) that the threads on pan were stripped so I loaded up on everything I would need to drop the pan and tap if for a larger drain plug. To see how bad the pan was stripped I torqued the plug to 27 ft-lbs. and discovered that the pan wasn’t stripped, the f-ing plug was hand tight! And judging by the solid 1/4 inch of oily crud built up on the rear skid that I scraped off with a putty knife, none of these oil change places ever removed the skidplate to change the filter.
Moral of the story? No one will ever service my Tacoma but me.
