The 5.29 Mega Thread!!

I tend to agree with this, though I have no issues with 5th and 6th, we ran from Colorado springs to Ouray this weekend which has us traversing some passes (Monarch and Imogene) without issue and great mpg. Have ran cross country without issue as well, that being said I think its geared rather high.

I dont know if the Tacoma should have a V8, gears are a torque multiplier so a small engine can generate a ton of power and torque just through proper gearing. That being said we have moved to the hybrid/turbo era. Even major motorsports such as F1 and Le Mans are all Turbo Hybrids and the Ecoboost engine was the first V6 to win 24 hr lemans. The more power and engine can generate the more forgiving the gearing can be and here is where Toyota got it wrong I think. I think they should have offered this engine in a Turbo format and I'm sure the 4th Gen Tacoma likely will. Toyota just won 24 hour le mans (Audi and Porsche did not participate) but they won with a turbo hybrid motor.

Regearing for larger tires generally goes with the territory but what is unusual is just how low we have to regear. I think this is due to the transmission gearing. 1st gear is surprisingly really high and it doesnt help that the transmissions doesnt hold the gears long enough. I get Toyota was wanting mpgs but I dont think this was the way to approach it

 

agreed. i'm running only slight bigger tires and am craving 4.88's which are soon to be installed. i think 5.29's should be used for folks running 33 and up tires. i do not agree with the goal being to obtain stock final drive. that's a compromise.

 

would like to hear more on ppl running 5.29. when i add lockers later, i will definitely consider 5.29 gears.

 

Mine are back from Cryo and the cores are being built now, so should all be done in the next couple of weeks hopefully; I can provide a better report then

Man if I hadn't already gone to 488s this would be what I need. 1/4in skids, fr/rr bumpers, 35s, custom dom bed rack. My truck weighs so much and the 488s aren't enough for living in the mountains. It was fine when I lived at sea level but it's not so good up here in Montana.

 

Subbed. I would definitely like to know if you're able to use 5th and 6th with the 5.29s. I don't crawl very often and have a local commute myself, but when I do go wheeling, I'm generally higher up in the mountains and climbing steep hills makes my truck feel very anemic with 33's. I plan on going to 35s soon.

 

Gears should be installed by the end of next. Cores will be completed this week and hopefully installed the following weekend.

I plan to drive on stock tires for a bit to collect rpm data and mpg data before putting the 35s on. Once I get the 35s on I intend to record both mpg and rpm data. The mpgs are calculated based on my trip meter and gallons filled at refills.

 

I am interested in how this works out for you. I am going to 35s and initially planned on 4.88s but am now considering 5.29s. I don't live at altitude nor have significant elevation to contend with so I am now unsure what the best plan will be.

Yeah, I feel ya. I DD this truck and have a decent [50 mile] drive to work at highway speeds, so I'd like to see if there is any benefit to the different gears. I only have to drive it once/twice a week but still it adds up.

 

Definitely!!! Yeah that’s what I’m interested in is with the highway speeds.

 

Im in the same boat, trying to figure out which is best for us that have to drive on the freeway for a bit.

Please post up your thoughts! Our trucks are so undergeared, especially with double overdrive gears, and the engine only really shines at higher rpms I bet even on stock tires you’ll be happy.

 

Initially. New beadlocks don’t get in for another week or so and I have 35s sitting in the garage collecting dust at the moment.
