Spent 3 days camping in the Oregon coast range. RTT was very comfortable.

Nice and patriotic. There’s a camping thread in here somewhere if it matters

That looks like a simple one. Still cant believe what you guys are willing to pay for one. I think I could get a tent to pitch on the ground and have a servant to make me coffee in the morning for that kind of money. Even my way larger Springbar tent was half the price I'm sure. I can stand up in it, spread out, have a comfortable mattress, but not good on very rocky or wet ground. Only advantage they have that I can see.

:fistbump:Yup, there are advantages and disadvantages to RTT’s and they are not for everyone. Mine cost $1,250 so not cheap but it works well for my situation.

Thats twice what I paid for my made in Utah, original Springbar tent, 8'X10'. After backpacking all these years, just takes up a good space to set up, used it twice the last 1.5 years is all, so not getting my moneys worth as I'm out every week.

Weight and space is the dealbreaker for me (on RTT's). Storage, too, I guess. Like @hikerduane I use a Springbar. 10x14 footprint. Huge, for my family of 5. So much space for the kids to play, especially if the weather turns, we're not cramped in a smaller tent driving each other nuts.

But I appreciate choices. Some of those RTT's are very nice and it works well for some folks. Having options is never a bad thing!

Just the wife and I so works out great, also sets up and takes down in one minute (takes longer to remove the cover than set up). Storage is easy for me as I made a pulley system in the garage for the RTT.

Newb question from an avid camper and backpacker - what it the reason for setting the tent up in the back of the truck instead of on the ground?

    I think it's a neat set-up, but I just don't understand the purpose.

We used to camp on the ground but my wife didn't like sharing space with snakes and other creepy crawlies so we went with a bed tent. The problem with a bed tent is you have to remove the contents to set it up so now with the RTT I can keep all my gear in the bed.

    I didn't either but now I have a RTT.

    Reasons for me are:
Arriving into camp at 12-1 am. Hop out the truck. Pop the tent open in 1 minute.
    Camp off snowy ground.
    Camp off wet ground.
(Haven't tested my RTT in a rain storm yet but I would rather be off the ground).
Don't have to pack my expensive dirty ground tent and then unpack and wash/dry it at home.
Allows you to be mobile. If I show up at camp at around 12-1 am and decide to move spots in the morning, I just close the tent in 3 minutes and drive off.
Its also way more comfortable. I didn't buy it with that thought in mind but wow I sleep like a baby on the foam mattress.

Makes sense. Thanks for the replies.

I guess camping in the South on a regular basis is a bit of a different paradigm than out West.

I know very well what camping means -> 11B
Also I know camping means spending a lot of money to live like an L.A. homeless...

Nice. We've been talking about camping on the Oregon coast. What park is this? Is it near the actual coast line?
