i rode up a few miles from the chimney mtn road side near sky lake. its pretty rutted within the first mile, but there was no road closure signs or gate on that end. I'm wondering if its only the rocky section thats closed.

Edit: Tray is still closed. 7/21/18

Rode up Sunday after spending the day in Helen. Entered in from the Chimney Mountain side. Was only able to make it around 1.5 miles in before I hit 2 obstacles I just didn't feel comfortable going around being up there by myself. The first major wash you come to has gotten really bad and the wet weather isn't helping anything. It's gully washed too deep to cross, and the high point is too narrow to navigate without bigger tires than mine. Just past that, around the curve, there's a sinkhole that's opened up that people have tried to place tree limbs into to help. Noped right on out of there. Too risky without some help.

An update on the road- I drove up Chimney Mountain Saturday to the top and back down Corbin Creek Road. As @iK0NiK noted, the road has some ruts that are deep. The washout in his first picture is over 3 feet deep (the far point in the photo). I stayed to the left and went around it with no issue, but my son spotted to make sure I fit. The next section with the logs was easy enough, but my son said that after I drove over, the logs were compressed and soggy. There was a Wrangler and a Cherokee and a KLR behind me. They were not locked. The Wrangler had suspension, but the Grand Cherokee was near stock. They made it through ok. From that point the trail is as it has been for the past few years. Nothing different all the way to the split near Hickory Knob. The rocky section of Tray was the same. When you get to the culvert, there is a lot of rocks piled to make it easy and my DCLB Taco made it easy although I thought I'd scrape. I'm F/R locked and it mattered once I got to the section past the culvert, but I crawled over it with no issues at all. Once we got to the top at the AT intersection, the big mudhole in the middle of the road was filled in with football size rocks. Corbin Creek was opened as was Tray mtn road. There is a Road Closed sign at that side of the rough section, but its been moved so you can drive around it. It's not a gate, just a saw horse type sign.

If there is a road closed sign and you are behind it, LEOs will give you a ticket FYI... Just a heads up.

There doesn’t need to be a gate on a road for it to be closed...

The road closed sign is at the top end only, so if you come from the bottom, you don't see it until you're leaving.

Thanks for the trail report! Are you from that area? If so, next time we're up that way I'll shoot you a message and maybe we can link up to do a few trails.

Read up post #68 & #73. Couple washes that have gotten pretty severe with all of the summer rains.

It is still closed regardless of which side you go (up or down Chimney side), it may not have a sign going up Chimney but you will still get a ticket if caught. Tray Mtn Road is open (just a dirt road) as people still live on that road
