They might be holding your key hostage now.

Bottom line.. if you have paperwork that has been signed by the dealer rep, and it expressly states you get 1000 for the rebate . They are wanting you to do them a favor and give them back $500. Your contract has been agreed to by both parties and must be honored unless both parties agree to amend/change the initial agreement. I think you have the leverage here and they have now power on this. (I am not an attorney in any state, nor do I play one on TV. These are my opinions and views and no more.)

They also signed a "We Owe' stating they owe you another key. If they do not honor that call Toyota Corp and open a case no dealer wants to have corp asking why they are not trying to make customers happy.

Here's the way I see it. I'm very cynical with respect to dealerships though so maybe take with some salt.

At any point they could make you a key. No problem. Even at the end of the day when you bought the truck. They've now taken 3 steps to get out of giving you the second key that they probably lost.

    1) Brushed off on day of purchase giving you card saying he owes you a key. Here he was just hoping you'd forget about it or not bother.
    2) Bold face lie that the "key guy" was having car troubles and wasn't going to come in. Wtf even is a "key guy" lol. Making new keys is easy, anyone in the dealership could do it. They knew you had a long trip and are hoping you get fed up and just leave it.
    3) Realizing that you probably aren't going to drop it they tried to come up with a way to get you to pay for it. Thus the call about you owe us $500 because of the mistake on the contract. That's absolute bullshit. Is comical that they even tried to play that card.

What it boils down to is they lost the key and don't want to pay for the new one. They aren't cheap...over $100 for the key alone I believe not including the tech's time to program it. That's just going to eat into their profit on your truck's sale and someone probably isn't happy about that. They just trying to get out of it however they can.

The mistake was signing anything before you had everything you wanted - including the 2nd key. Dealerships are straight garbage. Never trust them with shit no matter how small.

Why don’t you see if you can get a discount on parts, truck wash, hat. Lol. Just see if they will scratch your back for the extra hassle.

I wouldn’t ask for the world, but again maybe just a little something for the hassle.

Also, if you already did all the paperwork the rebate troubles fall on them.

Oh I mean I was the dealer mechanic. Someone effed up and didn't give the customer of an SRT Ram their second key so they paid me straight time to drive to his house 2.5 hours away and program it on the spot.

There's no way I would drive to a dealer that far away without some serious compensation. It's their failure to provide the key (unless OP signed something stating they received it... I know I had to) and the fact it can't be found just makes it that obvious it's on them.

Sound like it's time to contact yota corp. 2 issues, the dealership is making it difficult for you to get your 2nd key to your brand new truck. 2nd, they are asking to change the price of the truck you already bought. I don't think yota corp would be too thrilled about this.

This happened to me too. Got home and noticed I only had one key fob with the valet key. I called right away and reported it. They called me the next day and said they would provide another key fob at no charge. Scheduled an appointment for this coming Friday. Guess what I found at the bottom of my back pack today......yup, the second key fob.

Unfortunately, my conscience wouldn't allow me to do that. They treated me well and I had a good buying experience with them. Plus the fact they offered to replace it at no charge

Tell them you won't sign a "new" contract until you get the key, then when they bring out the new contract, after you have your key tell them to go pound sand

Once both parties signs the contract, they cannot come back to you an say they made a mistake and would like to “redo” the contract. With that mentality, you could just hand them back the 1 key they gave you and the truck and say cancel the contract and give you all your money back. WTF...that is what the contract is for. I am no lawyer, but I don’t think they will never win in court so I would just fight it. They are just hoping you will just sign the new contract. Don’t do it!

Show them this  and ask for a free OEM bedmat for your trouble of driving there twice while you are picking up YOUR spare key fob and vallet key.

    No new contracts either.

Take the great advice you’ve gotten on reddit.

Edit: specifically the one from the one who worked at the dealer you copied what he said.

Wow. This thread went from bad to worse....Jeez.

Not giving the buyer the other keys, I mean...I guess it could be an honest mistake. I kinda feel like not really though because I'm sure they have a process and this is one of the steps in the process. Like when they had you all your documents and other stuff, maybe a "goodie bag" with owners manual, documents, warranty info, etc.

I would be through the roof pissed if I drove 45mins each way to be stood up. I try not to be an asshole, but I would have made a scene on the spot. Especially since I know that pretty much anyone could make a key.
I would have basically steered the conversation to "just to be clear, I bought a brand new vehicle from you, and you made the mistake of not giving me my keys, and now you are continuing to withhold my keys from me? YES or NO?"
'Well sir, it's not really like th--'
    "YES OR NO?"

The last dealership I went to had about 30-35 bays and 50 techs working there at any one time. I'm sure one of them has programmed a key before.

Then when they called and tried to change the contract. Wow. Holy s***. That blew any shred of "well, maybe an innocent mistake" out of my mind.
I love it though! They screw the customer - Nu-uh, nope. Can't do it. You signed the contract. No takesies-backsies. The interest rate is what it is.
But when they actually make a mistake - We need you to come in and agree to pay us more money.
