5w-20 is so much cheaper and easier to find. Any problems using it instead?

0W-20 is very common. Where are you searching?

I wouldn't risk using a thicker oil. Tolerances in engines keep getting tighter. I agree with LivinOnEdge, any auto parts store, walmart, etc should have this stuff in numerous brands.

Manual says using 5w-20 is okay but must be replaced with 0w-20 on the following oil change.

Yes the same 3.5L specs 5W30 in other countries.

But, I’d run 0W20 until 60k miles so Toyota doesn’t have a reason to deny warranty work until then.

You got a Pro and can go 10k miles on a change and you think using 0w20 is too expensive...smh

They wouldn't anyway! There's a law that says they have to proof that damage is due to sth the owner did when denying warranty claims.
In this case very hard to do since they spec 5W30 for foreign markets as you say. Here they tell you to use that water like 0w20 ONLY because of CAFE regs.
Unless you live above the polar circle no reason to use only 0w20

Yeah I agree, you can use heavy 20wt too if you want, most all synthetics flow well below 0F

They can say that the oil you used was too thick and caused a bearing to seize which blew your engine up and you can't do anything to make them cover it under warranty :notsure:

Agreed...easy to find and not that expensive given the change interval. Otherwise...yes you can use it. The viscosity difference between 0 weight versus 5 weight is minor. At operating temperature, they are the same.

Oh no. Here's how it works: You go to the dealer with warranty claim. They approve or deny based on their experience and Toyotas expertise. If denied, they will give you a reason. If you don't agree, then you fight it... on your dime. That includes lawyers, experts, etc.
So yes, Magnusson Moss is there to help you keep it fair. The piece everyone forgets is they don't have to prove anything initially. You have to challenge their findings with your own money and your own proof.

0W20 isn't hard to to find. I just checked and every Walmart within 30 miles has Mobil-1 Full Synthetic 0W20 in stock.

You almost busted the front diff, replaced the OEM bearing with 3rd party bushing, lifted the truck and who knows what else done and worry about warranty being denied because of oil grade???
