How do I know which TPMS sensors are compatible?

Looking at running two spares and keeping them rotated in as a set of six. So I want tpms sensors in those wheels as well. How do I know which sensors to get (not from Toyota - they want $92 a piece). And as important, how do I know they’re working, or register them or whatever, BEFORE I install them on the wheels?

I don't think the system is capable of recognizing more than 4 Sensors.

Couldn’t I take note of the sensor info and register the new sensors as I rotate them into service?

I think they are PMV-C015. I doubt you will be able to do 6 but I think someone on here was able to do 5 for a spare. Search that part # in 3rd Gen section & should find that thread

You can if you have a way of programming the code into the ecu.

That's correct I believe you can store 5 codes ( 4 plus spare) why Toyota doesn't let you store 8 (4 summer and 4 snows) I do not know.

Do you need some special tool to do that? I thought (oops) it could be done with the head unit...

Most shops clone your old ones vs. digging into the Ecu. Too costly to have all the different scan tools.

Stay away from your dealer, you’ll leave extra sticky!

Hit up an Indy have them clone you Set of sensors and drive away!

Negative. Only four total as per my dealer. Yet another spot where Toyota cut corners on these trucks.

So they went backwards on these trucks? My 2007 would recognize the spare... it only had the indicator lamp so I pulled my hair out for a week before I realized the spare dropped 2lbs low due to the cold.

Shoot, forget about a sensor in the spare, what about having a spare?! Lucky our tacos come with a spare. Expect Gen 4 to have 3 tires.

Can get OEM sensors on tire rack for half the price of dealer price

Is this the tool tire shops use and are the serial numbers all else that’s needed? In other words if I have two spares w sensors, and I have the serials documented, is it just a matter of swapping them into the truck’s computer when I rotate?

No their tools are able to read the sensor IDs also. But yes you get your laptop and input the codes into the programming device. then plug into OBD and learn it to the ECU. Quick and painless

"Expect Gen 4 to have 3 tires."

You know that there were Citroén ads back in the 60's that showed a DS21 driving down the highway with only three wheels. Obviously not recommended but entirely possible on that car.Citroën_DS_on_3_wheels.jpg
