i would echo what a lot of others are saying here. As far as a midsize - tacoma all the way. resale, logevity, reliability, etc.

but if i'm buying a new full size 2018 its probably in this order

    GMC Sierra denali
    Tundra
    Silverado
    F150
    Titan
    Ram

Why does he "need" an F250 or F350 if all he is going to be doing is hauling dirt bikes?? 12 miles/gallon makes the Tacomas 20 mpg or so look like a freakin Prius.

    lol you'd think/hope so, right?

You would be in utter disbelief at how many Tacoma owners and prospective buyers are completely and painfully unaware of the issue.

One time I went to go look at a 2003 double cab locally. 108k miles, fully loaded, seemed decently maintained, asking price was $9k but I was gonna pull the whole "I'm your guy, I got cash. I know how Craigslist is - lotsa jokers. Just take the ad down so you stop getting harassed by lowballs (little did he know) and let's meet up."

Well, he didn't play along. Without my knowing, I actually showed up to a parking lot bidding war on this truck. I show up to test drive it, and there's a guy and his son there looking at it. They pretty much didn't know the difference between the Tacoma and a Ford Ranger except the badge on the grille. Completely clueless.
I'm trying to help myself out a bit. The 4 of us (me, guy and son, and seller) load up and go for a test drive. I ask about the frame. All 3 of them had clueless looks on their faces. "Sprayed or replaced?" I ask. The guys look at me like I'm speaking alien.
30 seconds into the test drive, the seller's phone rings 2-3 times, and he tells me to turn around and go back because theres 3 more guys waiting at the parking lot.

We get back, and now I'm in a bidding war with 6 different parties in a Best Buy parking lot. I knew this wasn't the truck (or seller) for me to do business with, but I stuck around for the entertainment.

I ask out loud "So has the frame been replaced??"
Literally EVERY.SINGLE.GUY look at me like I was crazy. One guy said "Frame....replaced?? What does that mean?" The seller was scratching his head.
One guy even mumbled something like "I thought cars were all that 'unibody' design nowadays'

"You guys never heard of these trucks and their frames rusting out?"
    One guy leaves immediately.
The other 5 guys are still clueless. One guy said "Surface rust on a 15 year old truck is to be expected. I aint worried about that"
"You never saw the news reports back in 2008 of these things folding in half?"
    No....
"Did ya do a quick google search of Tacoma common issues?"
All I heard was these are the best trucks!
    "Here, let me show you"

I got on the ground with a small hammer I had brought. I made one hit right at the passenger side leaf spring perch and it did not have a riiiiiiing sound.
"Listen to this" I started by the trans crossmember and moved back.
    *tap* riiiiiiing
    *tap* riiiiing
    *
    tap* riiing
    *
    tap* THUD

So I said good luck, and left them to their business.
I actually looked at a different double cab about 2 miles away 10 minutes later.
Hopped out of my car, and within 30 seconds I was gone.
Frame had plates welded all over it, expanding foam gushing out of everywhere.
"Whoa buddy. This frame is fucked"
Oh yeah...it's from Northern PA. I didn't write that in the ad?
    "Later, dude."

Again...you'd think and hope so, but it's not the case.

I've seen SOOOOOO many ads on craigslist for trucks with bad frames that go like "Bought the truck last month for $8k. It failed inspection for a rusted frame. I had no idea. Now I'm selling it for parts"
I'm in the Northern VA/DC area btw. Nothing too crazy with snow/salt.

The main reason is because the frame is the sacrificial anode. The frame gets completely consumed, but the body stays mint.

Tell your “friend” to sell the dirt bikes and buy a Tacoma for off-roading.

What does your friend intend to do with this F250 "investment" besides hauling dirtbikes with his mirrors fully extended?

Does he need to tow heavy or frequently?

Not your truck and not your purchase so why do you care what he gets?

When someone asks me about something like this, I ask their goals for function.

If i know something that fulfills several of their points, I'll suggest they put it on their shopping list.

    Its their call
