I had this update performed last week and then drove 2200 miles from Dallas Texas to Seattle Washington. Made it drive much better around town. Still hunts a little while going up some minor to mid inclines. Instead of dropping 2-3 gears it only dropped 1 gear most times. The gas pedal is much more responsive. It never really goes into 6th gear though. Granted I was going 75-80 most the time. I'd say it was in 5th gear about 80% of the time while normally driving on the highway of the 2200 mile trip. There were a few times when the road was flat and there were no major winds pushing against me it would go into 6th gear. Gas mileage was between 16-20mpg straight highway depending on the terrain. I do have slightly taller k02s on the truck though.

One thing that I found strange....
I few times I would try to shift it into 6th gear manually and it refused to. I would pop the shifter over to shift manually and it would drop into 4th(while going about 60mph) I would shift to 5th and I'd see the rpms drop, then shift into 6th and the number would change on the screen but the rpms would stay exactly the same. I'd shift back to 5th and no change, then to 4th and the rpms would go up.

Great write up. All around, I think you pretty much described my exact experiences with the update. For the 6th gear issue, the transmission seems to be waiting for me to hit a certain speed or RPM in 5th gear, like in ECT mode, depending on load. I've found that if I push a few extra MPH or just the throttle in general, it'll shift into 6th every time. Granted I live in northwest Florida, so not a lot of varying terrain, but I was easily able to reproduce the behavior in north Georgia. I'm also running on 265/75R16 Falken AT3Ws.

I'm curious to know how many people are experiencing improved driveability and better gas mileage. After 3 fill ups, I am getting at least 1.5 MPG better than before driving around the city. Highway seems to be about the same, but I can live with it since the truck is no longer constantly shifting every time the wind blows.

I know it's a truck so I'm okay with 16-20 mpg.... I originally went to look at a Tundra but saw this Tacoma and figured a Tundra would be overkill for me at this point in my life. The tacoma is plenty big enough for my wife and two boys. If we need a car with good gas mileage/range we will just take my wife's car. It has a 20 gallon tank and has a range of 550-600 miles per tank!!

Know what really pisses me off about this? I complain and complained and complained about it to my local dealer and numerous calls to Corporate about how unsafe it was and that it's not right. Instead of being told "we know theres an issue, sorry sir, we're doing our best right now to fix it, we will let you know when that is" Instead I get from Corp. this prick named Jaime "theres nothing wrong with your truck, this is the way it's meant to drive, if anything it sounds like your'e a dangerous driver, maybe you should re-evaluate your driving behavior for everyone else's sake." The guy was very immature and unprofessional.. This was the asshole (that i talked to 1st) superior..
After this is fixed i'm calling him back. IF he still has a job.

Well......I am very interested in having my truck updated based on the results here. Close to 90% here are confident the truck drives better, with only a small portion of those finding they have taken a hit in economy.

Toyota has done something positive, now they just need to eliminate the hassle of faking some story about a drive through the Himalayas to get the update applied, without push-back.

Closing in on 100 votes and still not a single negative experience. Guess this tune is going to be a “must have” for the 2016s to early 2018s. I am surprised people are still reporting dealers that will not apply the tune.

I supposedly had the new flash performed this Monday, either the 58 or 62 but my receipt did not document it.

It showed the charge code for it being performed but no sticker or any other notes.

I selected maybe a “Placebo” because it feels no different on the surges at 40-60 MPH.

I’m wondering if they actually flashed it or I’m one of the few seeing no change.

You can't make it shift up earlier than the ECU wants to. You can hold it in a gear or you can down shift. But the number you shift it to is just a limit that it won't shift beyond.

I'm the opposite of the placebo effect. I didn't know about the update. Just took it in for scheduled service and noticed over a few days that it drove much better. Then I read about it.

Biggest difference to me is that it won't lug down the rpms as low before it shifts. Now it's a clean shift of 1 gear at the right time instead of dropping 3 gears at the wrong time.

Did the update two weeks ago, really pleased. As far as mileage differences, I don’t know that I can make a scientific analysis. It may be skewed, because I really like how it behaves when I push my right foot down, so I’m doing a bit more of it as of late

Has anyone w/ a 2018 had this done? I think my VIN is apart of the 0058 one but is a 2018. I just dropped it off so let’s see what they say. The service advisor was cool on the phone yesterday...when I showed up she said “let’s get that TSB done.” I’ll report back later.

My 18 had the 58 tsb. No issues really prior. A few times I had some gear hunting 40 to 50 mph range. I was really happy with the way it drove prior to the tsb. All the talk on here about it so I had my 5k service done and the tsb. Night and day difference and a little bump up in the mpg. Very happy and the wot is awesome. With the traction control off she will smoke the tires. It would never do that before. Don't fear the tsb!

Just dropped off my taco for the update at the dealership. Service guy was giving me a hard time about it saying “only in high altitudes” since I live in Houston.
I told him I drive in “high altitudes” and it stumbles at wide open throttle. Finally convinced him to update it. Now just waiting to pick up my taco........

I went in for the a-arm drain hole fillers, armed with the TSB, to eliminate my howling noise issue, and they looked at me like I was our of my mind.....”wow.....never heard of anything like that....”. It’s ludicrous.

There your sign. If it feels better and drives better, I would be fine with it.

I’m picking up my 2018 Tacoma TRD Off-Road on Monday. Would this update already be done on newly built vehicles?
