Yeah I know. The guy is full of kaka... if an automatic was superior, then why are semi trucks still 10 speed?

My 2011 SR5 was an auto. I drove it like a stick anyway when I towed... going up and down through the gears manually. Even then it was mediocre at best. When I was looking at 2017s I was not impressed by the automatic and figured, "what the heck; take $3,000 and give me a 3rd pedal."

This truck is a towing machine.

It makes it even more insane because the trucks are built in Texas and THEN shipped to Canada. We can't even buy a made in the USA MTLB OR. WTF

I think I remember seeing somewhere that the take rate for manuals in the Tacoma was around 5 or 6 percent.

I totally get it. With a very heavy load a manual feels way better to drive. Much more control in all situations.

I don't understand why the heavy duty trucks don't offer sticks anymore (except the current gen RAM 2500, don't know if they'll keep it in the next gen) people who buy F250s and Chevy HDs to tow boats have been AT only for a decade. It's so sad and strange .

I think a lot is based on fuel economy or meeting CAFE standards. An automatic can be geared to take advantage of the way the test is set up, and loaf along in 8th at 50 mph. I'm not trying to be a keyboard warrior, but I was taught that autos had taller first gear ratios due to the torque multiplication of the converter, and this was the reason they were better suited to towing in that they made it easier to get a heavy load moving from a standstill without the need for a bull low and an incredibly heavy duty clutch plate and spring. It seems like there advantages to both a/t and m/t. Don't get me wrong, the availability of a manual was the reason for getting this truck over a newer Colorado. I live in a mountainous province, so I'm used to seeing the automatic tranny fluid stains near the top of long hills. I don’t like the vagueness of an auto either, but I was going from my experience with all the vehicles I've owned, and in the specs, the autos always seemed to have a greater tow capacity.

I highly recommend the Sport. If you really really want the locker and softer suspension. You can very easily buy used TRD OR shocks and springs with low miles for very cheap on TW. You can get a air Locker to satisfy your desire for locked wheels aswell. Plus you get the hood scoop and painted fenders if you're into that kind of stuff.

Anybody could easily come up with 7 speed Manual transmissions.
    R 1 3 5
    L 2 4 6

L would be granny low for heavy loads and then 1-6 would shift normally.

I do have a Sport! Already have 5100s and a compressor installed. Air locker is next major mod on my list (unless magnuson gets their shit together and releases a 3.5 supercharger)

That's be cool, I used to love the "L" gear on old Ford trucks
Tremec already has a 7 speed manual, the TR-6070.

I recall seeing a 7 speed manual in a Corvette and a Porsche, would love to drive!

Somewhere I have read or heard that the Automatic Transmission get better fuel mileage than the Manual transmission. maybe for those who don't know how to roll with the manual gearbox that could be so, I have been running at 65 to 70 Mph highway and seeing a low of 18.5 Mpg when there is heavy traffic to a 23.4 Mpg Average with mild traffic at a constant 70 Mph run. I did get a 25.8 Mpg on a trip but we won't count that...... it was all down hill....in 6th gear foot off the gas hovering over the pedals ready ready to brake? shift?

I’ve been away from a manual for a long time. I now have 2.5k miles on this one and my left leg is killing me. Anyone experienced this before? I’m sure it’s juts my old body getting use to it.

Does anyone have any pointers on adjusting the clutch pedal free play? I've never had to adjust it but I think my new clutch replacement needs a little adjustment since I have to step all the way to the floor to get it to start...

Not sure how you hold your left foot when driving but I used to get pain in my shin and knee area because I would keep my foot just a few inches away from the top of the clutch pedal when driving, ready to engage at any time. This would cause my ankle and shin muscles to always be tense and then hurt my leg. I would not keep it like this the whole time driving but would hold it there longer then necessary when accelarating or decelarating. Now I got in a habit of always resting my left foot on the dead pedal as soon as Im done rowing. This seemed to help me get my foot enough rest when Im driving to not cause any discomfort. Again, not sure if this is the case for you or how you drive, so hard to guess what it could be, but just an idea, atleast what helped me. Or take a few hours of video of how your feet work when your driving and then we can all critique you and give advice :)

And then there is off road. I just traded an auto for MT and drove it on the White Rim Trail in Canyolands NP. No comparison.
