Transmission Oil Leak

Hey guys I just changed the transmission oil on my truck a few days ago and now there is a leak, there was never a leak before this. Its a 2001 3.4L V6 manual transmission. All I did was drain the transmission and the transfer case and put about 2.5 quarts in the transmission and 1 quart in the transfer case. Could I have added too much and thats what caused the leak? Should I have drained the pan as well before I added oil back in?

 

They're hard to overfill. I usually add three full quarts.

Where's it exactly leaking?

A common place is at the shifter. Originally, they used a cork gasket. Now toyota sells a orange gasket maker for the application...

Just pull the shifter boot and bezel. And inspect to see if it's wet and dripping down.

 

Im not sure where the leak is coming from, its dripping down the transfer case. Is the shifter above the transfer case? I'll try pulling the shifter boot and bezel and see if thats it. Thanks for the advice!

 

What type of “transmission oil”, exactly, did you use? was it GL-5 or?

$30 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90

 

I'd spray down the tranny and TC with simple green. Let it sit for a few minutes and hose it down really good and monitor for leaks if you're having trouble locating it.

Aren't these trannies in need of GL-4 only?

 

The Lucas oil says it exceeds standards for GL-4 and GL-5.

I am planning on cleaning it to help locate the leak though.

 

GL-4 is good. Your method to find it should work.

Ok I cleaned up the oil off the transmission and transfer case, all I can really tell is wherever the leak is coming from the oil is dripping down and filling up the drip pan under the transfer case. Does anyone know if that means the leak is probably coming from a specific gasket or something?

I havent driven the car since I cleaned the oil but I turned it on and let it run for a few minutes and no sign of the leak.

 

Yeah it's likely the TC shifter seal. Maybe even the transmission shifter seal. Could even be from one of the TC sensor gaskets.

 

Ok so after cleaning everything I took the car for a 20min drive and now have let it sit for a few hours and there is no fluid leaking anymore. Could this mean I overfilled it and the excess fluid has leaked out or could the fluid have gotten so low its not reaching wherever the leak is?

 

Maybe. I'd just keep an eye on it.

Ok so it seemed like the leak was gone but after driving around a bit today it is definitely still there, here are some pics. The only place it actually drips onto the ground from is the transfer case drip pan but it also gets all over the transmission im not sure if this is from splatter or if the leak is somewhere near the top of the tranny. It seems to get pretty dirty at one of the seals(in the pic). Any advice?
