Anyone else’s headlights “peeling”?

was washing my truck this weekend and noticed the protective film is peeling off of one of my headlights.

 

Is it the actual UV hardcoat?

Scary to hear and the 2016s are about the age where the headlights turn yellow if not regularly waxed/coated.

These headlights have alot of plastic exposed to the sky. I dont see them aging well, Nor do I get why manufacturerd make bulging lenses with so much plastic exposed to the sky.


I recomend Optilens. Apply 3 coats 2 times a year and you can triple the life of the original UV coat on the lens. I did this on my 2002 lexus and never really had any fading or yellowing. And that car was exposed to the sun alot here in south florida.

 

Good tip. I’m going to take it to the dealer next week to have it documented. Should be covered, I’m thinking.

Nope, I’ve waxed them a few times but not regularly.

This time I did apply Wolfgang sealant, which is when I discovered the peeling area.

Optilens is expensive stuff!

 

Yup pretty pricey. You can treat the headlights multiple times with it though. A little goes a long way. I had spectacular results on my IS300. Each headlight is about 800 bucks from the dealer...
I think the money is well spent if the truck is outside all day. The sun here in south florida is brutal.

I used a clear protective wrap on my headlights, keep them looking new and if they fade I just replace the film and the headlights look good as new

 

If it works, it’s definitely money well spent.

Does it replace the UV coating that has worn away? Or is it more of a preventive measure?

 

How on earth did you get it to fit well?

To me, its a preventative measure to keep the original coating intact. You can also use it on restored uncoated headlights. If you get deeper into headlight restoration, you will find more expensive and probably superior UV cured OEM style coatings normally applied by professionals.

 

Mine are peeling, more so the driver side.

D15601 Meguiar's usually once a month, sometimes twice a month.

 

wow.....chemical guys pretty expensive........1 gal, $349......and the wax, $1400....i would just replace the headlight

 

Or you could spend like $60 to have them covered in PPF and never worry about fading again.

 

Just keep them clear (don’t wait until they are yellow) and take them to a body shop and have them cleared with auto clear when they start to fade. I had to do it on my FRS. It was $80 and the clear will last as long as your paint will if taken care of. Took a pair of slighted hazed lights and they looked brand new again until I sold it

 

It’s not good to wax your headlights, actually progresses the aging and yellowness from what I’ve always been told. I used to restore headlights. We used to 5 stage sand them then spray them with a clear and hit them with a Uv light for a while. Could make the yellowest of headlights look almost brand new.
