Because HAM radios operate in bands where someone who doesn't know what they're doing could possibly interfere with more important radio networks. The lower HAM bands are next to the emergency bands, and the last thing anyone should be permitted to do is to stomp on those freq ranges. This goes back to the days when most HAMs were using HF, which can push a shitload of wattage and really ruin someone's day.

It also permits the government to keep count of all the licensed users, and by staying licensed we prove to the FCC that we are using those HAM bands regularly. They're always searching for extra commercial bandwidth, and the HAM bands are always eyed by the commercial vultures.

Um. Excuse me? My communication and being heard is always, I mean ALWAYS more important than any kind of emergency communication.

    Yes.
This is about communications gear in general, not specifically Ham Radio... I'll use a few real world, first hand, experiences I've had on why having communications gear matters. At least for those of us who are going to go wheel at some place further off the beaten path than Hidden Falls.

Next, I did the rimrocker trail in 2016. That starts in Montrose, CO and ends in Moab, UT. It's 168 miles off road through the mountains of western Colorado and Eastern Utah. I had cell service for about 20 miles total out of that whole trip. If we had an emergency the radio gear in my truck was the only method we had with which to call for help.

Finally... While wheeling with friends it's nice to be able to talk between trucks. Citizens Band is what I'd consider the lowest common denominator. The radios are cheap (less than $100), and are dead simple to use. The draw backs of CB are. The antennas are Huge (see my post earlier about Firestiks.) the radios use AM, and are limited by law to 4 watts. With CB you get 40 channels to choose from.

Compared to GMRS, you have a 7" antenna (rather than 102"), the radios use FM, and are 5 watts on channels 1-7, and up to 50 watts on channels 15-22. With GMRS you have 15 total channels to choose from.

Ham Radio takes the best of GMRS and turns that up to 11. I have equipment that has allowed me to talk, while in the truck, from Austin to Moscow Russia while doing 70mph. My 2m and 70Cm Radios are licensed for up to 1,500 Watts (although I've never used more than 75W). With 2M or 70CM ham radio you don't have channels, but instead have frequencies. In 2M alone, if we pick common simplex frequencies there are 18 frequencies recommended for use. But from 144.000Mhz ---> 148.000Mhz every 0.015mhz could be another channel. (which is a lot.)

    Yes.
In case I didn't answer the question though... If the goal is to have a bad ass truck, that drives around town, goes to cars and coffee, etc. there's certainly no "need" for communications gear beyond a cell phone.

It sure makes caravaning easier though. :)

I mainly want it because there is no communications in the river bottoms and most of where I hunt. Been in several emergencies where this could have been used.

But, but, but, you can only talk on one channel at a time...right? And, listen to one channel at a time.....

And, who wants to talk to Russians? (Please note, all you mods, I specifically opened the door myself for ban-worthy comments, and avoided. Yes, self discipline. Proof I can show restraint....)

We used to use 1000W troposcatter microwave antennas to cook hot dogs on very long sticks. 500W HF will still make your eyes and kidneys hurt (had to take a guy to the ER who ignored our safety cordon). Can't even imagine what 1500W would do to someone....but I bet they turn into a Ball Park Frank.*

*They plump when you cook 'em.

I think the big military style whip antenna are cool. Want one on my Ford Fusion Hybrid.

Imagine the power I could push hooking that shit up to the batteries in that car....lol.

    Yes.
That's why there are four transceivers in the truck, that can operate on five frequencies at the same time...

I mean, someone has to... right?

I dunno man, my wife has been ignoring me for years now, with no noticable effects. Seems like that could be applied to an entire country.
