I'm shit with stats, but I'd say it is millions of combinations, when in reality VM hit the jackpot for you? The fact that you have Windows running a Windows VM . . .

Hey, I hate everything Apple, but MS has its (serious :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored:) limitations.

Get this, my wife's school district keeps telling the folks to NOT shut down regularly. No matter how much I preach, she still won't listen. Thankfully, she hasn't run into trouble. . . yet.

Also, TS feeds realtime data. You can monitor that to get a 'peaceful easy feeling.'

If it were me I'd already have sent my second bricked ECU off to Matt.

I have about 25 VMs on my work laptop. So adding another wasn't a big deal. I have to support different tools and tool versions. Some tools are old and won't work on modern OSs.

My thinking with the 2-day TIS pro subscription would be that I wouldn't have to play any registry games as Win10x64 is supported (i assume that happened in a later release). I'd also get the ECU image direct from TIS. But mostly getting it outside fo the VM is the goal.

I used to hate on Macs hardcore. Then I got a 2nd gen iPod. Then an iPhone. Then I decided I wanted to take stab at developing apps on the side. In before they stopped allowing sole proprietors with fictitious business names. So that required a Mac. Got a MacBookPro. I instantly felt like a computer noob again and loved it. Later I got an iMac and slowly did more and more on it than my built-up gaming PC. There's still many things I'm not a fan of but once you are in the ecosystem deep it's nice and cozy. Except for the networking gear. Discontinued that stuff so now I have a pile of Netgate/pfSense and Ubiquity gear to install in the house.

The linked version of TS in this thread loaded on our laptop without touching anything. Give it a test drive before even hooking it to the Taco. Take it step by step, just like debugging.

I hear you. Companies I worked for got hosed by the end of support for both WinXP and Chrome on XP. Hell, we had to turn back to a way old version of Java to run a certain program. That was freaky.

I've tried Macs in school, iPhones that the fam has, and Macbooks. It just doesn't jive in my puny head. I can't say why, but MS and Android just work for me. Seeing the fam constantly struggle with every OS upgrade (the last couple have seemed to go better) is just something that I could not tolerate. I just can't deal with iTunes either and the general Apple licensing that you alluded to. I'm not a pirate, but I'm not an angel either.

Hehe...started my career on IBM 4381 VM/CMS. Some guys thought MVS was the cats ass (still is) but you could run multiple MVS Virtual Machines disconnected on VM/CMS but ya sure as fuck couldn't virtualize VM/CMS on MVS.

I use VM's today but not for anything important. They certainly have their value, but on a laptop with additional communication layer, I'll pass. There is absolutely no benefit in this process to introduce multiple layers of additional points of failure to this equation.

Put TS on your host, use your genuine Tactrix cable and play with that shit.

I was gonna give it a shot tomorrow because I wanted more time on the TIS subscription. But after I got back from dinner I could not wait.
Paid $65 for a 2 day pro subscription. Downloaded and installed the latest TS in the Host. Got it licensed.

Had the truck already on a charger with the hood open.
Opened the windows, Ran the power cable for the laptop out the window so the door could close.
Made sure I had an internet connection because I was doing this by the book.
Turned off the AC, Entune screen, dome light (even though the doors were closed).
Plugged in the Tactrix cable. Followed the instructions for TS to confirm communication. Passed.

Performed Health Check on power train ECUs. Got an error while communicating with server. pressed the try again button and it completed.
Updates for both Engine and Transmission ECUs listed.
Followed one of the Update links. This opens a list of TSBs. This is where the dealer tech goes shopping for the one that fits. I picked 0058-18. This opens the TSB PDF in your browser. For me that was MS Edge with sucks because it has it's own PDF viewer and the links inside don't work. Copied and pasted the URL into IE and it opened in Acrobat like a good boy. Now I followed the link to the CUW ECU file. Saved it to the desktop then ran it.

The update wizard starts and it goes through the steps of confirming the key is off then the key is on then go.....

It started updating. HOLY SHIT. It's working but it aint done yet.

    CAL 1 done.

CAL 2 starts...... This one is a little slower.

Update complete! Turn off key. press next......

Turn on key. press next to confirm success........ failed.. can't talk to vehicle. GASP!!!!!! I saw this screen last time....

Try again. turn off key... wait. Turn on key... (right here I realized when asked to turn on key for the confirmation I had only pressed the start button once and it was in the accessory mode not the On position). Whew! This time it worked.

Ran another health check and found no updates.

Started the truck and it fired right up.

Confirmed on cheapo scan tool that B04 and whatever the transmission update version is got installed.

Took it for a test drive and OMG you can leave the AT in "D" now. Gentle squeeze on the gas and it kicks down one gear like it should without any of that super delayed 'WTF? nothings happening' feeling.

Thanks TW for making me ill and exited all at the same time.

    TL;DR. I updated to B04 myself.

    Guess I should update this:

 Don’t use hacked versions of Techstream for an ECU update.

 Don’t use a virtual machine environment to do an ECU update.

 Don’t use Bluetooth or WiFi dongles for an ECU update. (USB only)

 Do turn off Windows update service. Note - My flashing laptop never sees the internet. Files are transferred via USB stuck. WiFi function is turned off.

 Do turn off Windows system sleep functionality. Use the “always on” setting in power management pane.

 Do turn off USB power management for the USB port you’re using.

 Do plug the laptop into a wall outlet. Note - I used to do this, but the laptop is always fully charged as I only use it for flashing.

 Do hook up a battery maintainer to the vehicle during an ECU update. This isa good idea, but I daily my truck so the battery is always topped off.

 Do turn off all electrical consumers during ECU update.

    Do open the hood.

    @OVTune

So maybe I’m in the same boat

    Got to this

    4AFA3E7D-39D6-4A46-94D4-015388134F10.jpg

    Then it suddenly said failure.

Battery charger was connected. WiFi was off.

    Now truck isn’t cranking.

    Fuck.

I tried and I couldn’t get it to identify. Going to try to let the battery charge some more then try again. It did crank for a little while.
