Hey Tacoma world. I’m gonna be starting a new career next year that will require a hefty commute that I realistically can’t do with my 2nd gens current mpgs. My plan is to get a new daily (while keeping the taco as my fun truck) which is more fuel efficient but I could also turn into a crawler once I make it to the point of getting a company truck! Please comment any suggestions. :mudding:

Buy a mid 2000's Civic 4cyl for like $4000. There's your fuel efficient vehicle (double what any "future rock crawler" will get you).

Turn the Taco into the off-roader/crawler.

2nd gens are generally better, albeit marginally, in the MPGs than 1st gens.

Personally for a commutting vehicle I would go with a Subaru impreza. You should easily be able to get 32-35 mpg, especially if you dont have a lead foot. The awd gives a certain amount of confidence in making it to and from work in varying road conditions. You can look at a crosstek, but they are extremely anemic as far as get up and go.
