Ok. That makes sense. But the parts listed to do the mod are usually another one way valve, eom or otherwise, unless you do the arb one. Is that overly helpful to replace it with the same thing, just higher up on the truck?

A lot of members just relocate the OEM breather higher, many others get an open two way valve altogether and relocate higher. I like the open two way valve

Are there are two way valves other than the arb one?

Sometimes the shock of a hot diff in cold water crossing creates suction.

All you are doing is moving the 'vent' to an area that it is much less likely to be submerged (and able to ingest water) should that happen.

I’ve read this before. However, the vent is a one way valve so I guess I’m still confused about the utility of moving it given that it should only vent out and not suck in regardless of where you mount it.

Just don’t do it and later when your diff fluid looks milky cause it got mixed with water, maybe you’ll understand why?

Just an FYI. If anyone is looking up part #'s and trying to figure out this mod. Toytec makes a rear diff breather kit for $32. Super easy to install took me about 20 min.

that diagram is an awful one if your trying to explain check valve function but I get the intent. Does anyone actually know if the oem is a check valve? No one seems to know for sure if this mod is even necessary.

The original is a one way valve, but I cannot remember which way it was. With the fact that folks found water in their rear diff and the front diff breather is up by the radiator, that is all that I needed to know.

When I swapped the diff fluid and did the mod, I found my diff holding a vacuum both times. So while it might be designed properly for the vent itself, the vacuum might be pulling in water through the axle seals? I just like that I don't have to worry.

I wonder why everyone said to use 3/8 tube when the 5/16’s worked so much better?

So just to clarify, We do not need to add a breather to the front diff or transfer case? Where did Toyota run the breather lines for the front?
