Building for Overland travel. Just got the truck in July of 2018. Added camper shell shore power plug and fan gastric fan to the top. I have a long list of plans yet to come.
I recently bought my first Tacoma in late June. My last build was a Jeep TJ. I decided I needed more room for camping. The TJ has a 94”wheel base. I went with a 2007 DCLB 4x4 base model it has a 140” wheel base. This will require a whole new driving style. I chose the base Tacoma because I plan to upgrade the suspension gears and add lockers front and rear. I have already added a camper shell that will be used for Overland trips. I plan to sleep in the bed and wheel it hard. I don’t see many LB Tacoma’s on the trails, I have wheeled it one weekend already. Although it is different, it did excellent even stock with AT tires and no traction control . I did have some great spotting to get through some tight spots but made it with no damage. I look forward to some needed upgrades. I have already added a “tech deck” to hold my iPad for navigation. I am in the process mounting everything to the shell so I can remove it and have it painted to match the truck. I added a “Fan-tactic” fan to the shell to keep it cool on the warmer nights. I am planning to add an awning before paint as well. I am looking at the Bilstine shocks with the OME heavy coils and Dakar rear leafs. ARB lockers front and rear with 4.30 gears to help turn the 34x10.5x17 tires on FJ wheels. I have both GMRS and a CB radio as trail coms ready to be installed in the next few days. I look forward to being a part of the Tacoma community.
