It's on my radar, I'm undecided. Any word on if they got the permit for the guided tours? Maybe the TW folks can do a semi organized trail run that day, close to the Vous and people can join up if they want to. One of the members of the Razorback LCs was a trip leader last year, and is this year as well, so there will be several from that club, and lots of Jeepers, plus all the FB folks that have committed. Randy had over 160 rigs last year, gave away over 5k in raffle prizes (2 RTTs, 2 12v fridges, 2 awnings, and a 9500lb winch) and had lots of vendors booths on site. Can only imagine this year will be bigger, so woods and trails in that area will be super busy that weekend.

I’ve never been either. I was thinking we could have a TW camping area if enough of us were going

That was part of the reason I rode with you guys on the way to the Bonfire even though most of the group didn't go. It was away from the main event and less crowded. My wife and I did a trip by Carwash Falls on the way home.

There's a pop-off valve on top of the differentials that releases air as the diff gets hot (from driving). Only it's one-way. So, as it cools, a negative pressure is created because the pop-off valve is obviously one way. This negative pressure can assist in pulling in water when crossing streams and stuff through the grease seals. The raised breather lets pressures rise and fall. Several pages back there's a picture of where I put my rear breather on my 3rd gen.

    Yeah.
Well, if everyone else is going I may be down. My parents will be in town that week but are leaving mid-week or so, I think. So can you just show up? I think registration is over.

I thought I was the last one to do this, just did mine a few weeks ago. The main benefit is that the stock location is super low and may suck in water when going through water that is deep but not crazy deep. I see a secondary benefit in that the stock breather may also get clogged with mud and not work properly, putting pressure on axle seals and other gaskets. The third benefit is that you can be one of the cool kids.

Haha, being a cool kid, my life's ambition.... As others have said it helps prevent the sudden cooling of the diffs from stressing seals or sucking in water. Easy mod, takes 15 mins and less than 20 bucks. I used vacuum line and lawn mower filter on the end, couple clamps. Done.

I dont think registration closes for Rendezvous, or not that I could find on the website.

I blew out my axle seals before I wised up and did the diff breather mod. Don’t do what I did. Haha

    Yeah.
I used red vinyl tubing (to match my antenna and TRD Pro accents) and a blue crankcase cone breather filter (to match my truck). Because, you know,. Can't really see any of it, but I know it's there.

TBH, that is the color tubing that Lowe's had, and the blue filter was the cheapest at VatoZone.

I used a bunch of fuel line. Super tough - should only have to do it once. That, plenty of hose clamps, and that adapter piece for the top of the diff is all you need.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P2S0TKQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Pretty sure I ghetto'd together some PEX fittings to join the breather filter to the front diff hose. The front diff pop-off valve is raised up, but it will still create negative pressure; so, I swapped it for a breather filter. I have a thread saved somewhere on t-case and tranny breathers too, but I understand that's a bit of work. Haven't ventured to doing that yet.

    Rear Differential Breather Mod
I put mine in the drivers side, rear tail light space, no drilling needed.

    Everything you need:
    1. Toyota Part numbers:90404-51026 Camary Union and 90930-03136 (Breather Union)
    2. Drill
    3. 3/8" drill bit
    4. Teflon tape
    5. 6' of 1/4" fuel line
    6. Screwdriver (flat head)
    7. 14mm and 10mm wrenches
    8. Hose clamps
    9. Zip-ties
    10. Wirecutters or razor knife
    11. Can of Skoal
    12. Ice cold beer (optional)

Step 1: Take old breather out using 14mm wrench

Step 2: Wrap new fitting with teflon tape.

    Step 3: Install new fitting/union using a 10mm wrench.

Step 7: Attach the new fuel line and tighten clamp (using a little dish soap will aid in sliding the line on the new breather). I ran the line parallel with the filler neck and drown the frame rail not out the bed pocket as pictured)

Step 8: Run the 1/4" fuel line and use zip ties to secure it.

Step 8: Install and tighten final clamp and be sure to leave enough line for axle movement.

In regards to modifying your diff/trans/t-case breathers it’s important to note that an open filter element will introduce moisture to the gear oil. Modern oils contain a lot of additives that make them very hygroscopic (this applies to all oils, hence the time limits for engine oil services). By modifying your breather you are drastically reducing the service life of your diff oil.

How should we relocate the breather so this doesn't happen?

Don’t use an open air filter, but a pressure release as in Post 3555
