hah yea a lot of 'myths' these days

I've also heard of a new 22re completely rebuilt motor simply fail with synthetic oil. The gentleman's explanation was the synthetic oil didn't allow the mating piston/cylinder components to properly break-in to one another, in which conventional oil would. Fiction or fact?

No, just capacity. Most aftermarket filters are significantly smaller than oem in fact.

I've heard many engine builders recommend breaking the engine in on conventional oil

Good call! I'll have to look over the manual - what's the provided p/n for oem filter?

OK guys I'm new to the forums. But anyways i got a 96 tacoma with the 3rz engine and the motor blew at 164,xxx miles it wasn't taken care of before I got it but anyways I got the motor rebuilt and the mechanic told me to use mobile 1 synthetic oil and used a bottle of zync and to change the break in oil after 4000 miles and continue using synthetic oil. What do you guys think should I use synthetic oil? And is the Miles to much because everything I've seen says to change the breakin oil after the first 500 and 1000.

I guess it depends on what exactly was rebuilt.. if it were me I’d be safe and run conventional oil as it will better allow the motor to break-in (or so I’ve been told). And later you can decide to convert it to synthetic if you’d like

Whenever they have a "best oil" thread over on the Valkyrie board, I always
think back to the Texaco re-refined oil they still sold at the gas station I hung
out at as a teenager... I bet a Valkyrie (and probably a Tacoma) would go
    300,000 miles even on that...

Costco has a sale on Mobile 1 synthetic every other month or so..
    6 quarts for $25.. (usually $35)
    can't beat that

I'll usually pick up a case or two when it goes on sale.

I have a 2004 4X4 Tacoma RC with the 2.7. I use Amsoil Signature 10-30 in the engine here in Wyoming and Amsoil in all the gear boxes. It works for me and I'm working on 10,000 miles intervals as far as the engine oil and filter are concerned with oil analysis, of course. I flubbed the last engine oil change because my air filter was dirty. My fault and there were reasons I won't go into.

My iron and aluminum levels were high for the first time because of a dirty air filter but TBN was great at 9500 miles on the oil. Doing a 4000 mile change this time and getting the oil analyzed. I'll try for 10,000 this next time around if sample comes back good.
