My '96 is manual and went right at 300,000 miles prior to my replacing the clutch, and has been perfect since and now at 410,000. So wanted a manual trans however wasn't able to find one with all the other features I wanted on mt new 2018.

My question is how good and durable is the current 3rd Gen Tacoma Auto trans? Many issues and/or shortcomings with them?

I would hope my 2018 turns out to be as great a truck as my 1996 Tacoma.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Search out the MT.

I drove MT exclusively my entire driving life, but this 3rd gen is probably going to be my last truck, and needed a vehicle that others could drive in a pinch.

No one can see into the future, so durability of the current Tacoma 6sp AT is anyone's guess.

Very happy with the AT, but MT is just a more pleasurable driving experience imo.

In the OVTune thread somewhere it was discussed if this auto trans could handle twin turbos . It was then said that the same trans is used overseas with diesels that put out a lot more torque than the 3.5L does . If all that is true It makes me worry less about how it lasts in a US Tacoma .

Judging from the above the 3rd Gen Automatic Trans must be holding up well with little issues.

Disappointment with the tuning of the transmission had been laboured to death......however durability of the transmission so far seems to be excellent.

With so many newbs hitting the trails (hard) in their AT Tacoma’s, we have seen very very few reports, if any at all, or failed or damaged transmissions. So far so good.

Same. Wife cannot drive MT very well.

I love MT and have driven it since my first car (‘86 Mazda). Will always love it, but decided to go auto for this Tacoma. Some nit picks but overall, I’m happy with it. There are numerous Toyota truck auto’s that are well into 500k+ territory. Even some that are considered to be weak (A340F) that people have driven and abused without issues for many many miles.

Just take care of it. Heat kills. Service it as instructed and I’d say chances are good it will serve you for a long time.

Thanks, the longevity is my concern and feel much better now about going with the auto. My trucks have always been manuals until now and they seem to last forever. I

It’s all in how you drive it too. You take care of it, it will last, but if you take it for granted it will die prematurely.

Keep looking for a MT. I am very happy with mine. I have had to adjust how I back up my trailer, due to its reverse gear ratio, but honestly I have been able to learn and the MT is great.

Too late as I already purchased the AT, as couldn't find a MT with other features I wanted. Besides after driving my '96 Tacoma for 22 years and 410,000 miles it was probably time for a change.
