It could easily be mounted in with the light clusters on either side. Why? Because then there wouldn't be any wiring to disconnect when taking off the tailgate. Toyota did not think this through.

Sorta like having child seat mounts in the access cab behind the driver so you have take your child out of their carseat and into traffic. Smart move.....not.

You’re going to have a hell of a skewed view mounting that far off center but that’s plausible.

What if you have 2 kids and need to have anchors on both sides? Or you have something on the pass side that prevents the child from being over there?

Oh no doubt, but I was stating a situation where one could have the gate down and still use a camera.
My dad is truck driver and I was taught to back up using the side view mirrors and he taught me to back up a trailer when I was 13, so yes, mirrors are definitely a great tool, but an extra set of eyes is nice too.

Yeah, tailgate does not affect mileage, I've noticed the same thing. It has to do with how the air flows at the back of the truck and creates a vacuum. I read a good article on it once. If you have a slide in camper in the bed you can't put up the tailgate. Dirtbikes? Same problem.

Or put the tailgate up before backing up, there’s a warning signal you get...

I work at ford so i dont know this but do the third gens not have back up sensors in addition to the camera? If so i assume the back up sensors would still work properly

Best option is camera in the 3rd brake light. That way you can also check on cargo as well as using it with tailgate down. It’s on fords, (probably GM), pees me off the Toyota didn’t do it. I was thinking the Mesojdm 3rd brake light and using the center hole for camera, but I just can’t get over how KC lights cheaped out and use white LEDs with red cover, rather than red LEDs with clear cover. (That way all the lights would match). Picky I know. Next option is mount it in the center of the bed against the cap, use the mounting holes for the factory trifold cover.

All my friends F350 have them, along with cameras in the tailgate / wing mirrors & front grill.

    Edit.
Here you go, it’s a option package called “Rear Camera - Center High-Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL) Camera”

Looks like your dealer need to spec their inventory better.....:)

Ok f350, im gas shop so f250 is biggest i work on. The wing/front cameras are cool but damn those mirrors are expensive now with heated/power adjust and fold/extending/plus cameras. I may go check out the f350s the diesel shop has next week.

I love how it points down when the tailgate is down, it works great for trailer hitch alignment that way!

A little something every chance we get.
Just so you know, I put in a rear license plate camera, suggested by others in this post. My 2007 had no camera. Mirrors are great, that's what we use. But out car has a nice cam, and I wanted my wife to have one show up in the truck as well. So, it works fairly well, and if you lower the tailgate, you lose the top half of the view. If I had thought/known about maybe putting one in the CHMSL, I certainly would have considered it.

Having the gate down to back up to a hitch works well for mine, in fact the camera pointing down is perfect.

Relocate. Mine is on my swingout . Unfortunately I can't drive with the tailgate down though.

The third brake light isn't a bad place, but would be rendered useless if you use a canopy. The camera should be located somewhere that will not ever be covered. Taillights and license plate come to mind. These are good locations if you are trying to line up your trailer hitch to a ball as well.
