I usually get off around 5-6pm on Saturdays and driving to Tahoe in the dark usually doesn't go over well with the passengers. A little offroading preferred..

    Any suggestions nearby?

Would like to use my roof top tent

Forget about offroading anywhere near the Bay Area. Portola Redwoods SP and Big Basin SP has some pretty good sites.
