06 Taco 4x2 2.7 tranny return line question

Hello all,
This my first post..I have been lurking for awhile and now finally have a question. I am going to install a Hayden transmission cooler on my 06 taco. I tow a trailer and would like to help the auto tranny stay cool just in case. I can't determine which line is the return line to the transmission. The two lines connect to my radiator on the drivers side. On is at the top of the radiator anr the second is at the bottom. So does anyone know which line is which? I have tried the "warm the tranny up and feel the lines for the cooler one" trick but they feel the same to me!

2006 Tacoma 2.7 with automatic tranny.

 

It doesn't matter which is the supply and which is the return, just pick one and splice the cooler in line. Remember to keep the bends in the lines gradual as a sharp bend will impede flow and cause more harm than good. And do not take the cooler in the radiator out of the loop, simply add the new cooler in addition to the one in the radiator as the transmission can never be too cool. Lastly, check the instruction for the new cooler and remember to add the required amount of fluid for the cooler and new lines as you are effectively changing the fluid capacity of the system when adding a cooler.

 

Thanks guys. Mavrick I was going to use it in addition to the radiator, I want more cooling. The only problem is that there is no way to top off the tranny with more fluid. There is no dipstick to check the fluid level. Would it hurt to not top it off?

I have a 2007 4-cyl with the auto trans and the dipstick is near the firewall on the drivers side of the engine.

It is very important to make sure that you have the tranny at the proper fluid level.

 

ok...now I really feel stupid! There was a dipstick (not me...the one for the tranny ok maybe me too) near the firewall! Ya know I had read somewhere that the tranny was a "sealed" type transmission (should have been my first clue) and that there was no way to top the fluid off without having to go under the truck with a special pump.
