No, they have never used the Allison tranny. That is exclusively a GM option in the 3/4 and 1 ton markets.

As for the original quesiton, the answer is Cummins hands down. The Cummins is a medium duty diesel engine first and foremost, and is simply placed into service in the Dodge truck.

As to the quips on the Dodge being crap, I put 108k miles on a '99 2500 CTD, and only ever had to replace the A/C compressor, and ABS sensor. I was literally still on the OEM tires when I sold that truck.

Dodge trucks are recommened by consumer retorts, right along with the Tundra, F series, Titan, and Silverado. It is one nice part of the market where you can simply choose based one a combination of towing specs and how much you like how it looks.
