I hear you and tend to agree. In this case, I've dealt with my dealer since before this current vehicle. At this point, I see them as an ally. They're good people. Time will tell if it stays that way.

Not sure about the other issues but could the clunking during warm-up be due to the engine running at a higher RPM? I've had a few trucks make clunking noises from the rear end engaging/disengaging while the engine is spinning faster for warm-up.

Honestly, what it sounds like is the truck is in 4th... then skips all gears in between and just slams into 1st as i come to a stop. Feels exactly the same as though driving a manual and dropping the clutch into 1st gear while slow speed

If it only does it during warm up then my assumption would be that it's shifting as normal and just giving a slight jolt when the driveshaft engages since the engine is still spinning faster. I could be wrong but I've had a few trucks do that, both autos and sticks, when they engage during warm up.

Possibly? I don't drive until it comes down from the higher Rev idling. But possibly still doing it at points? Idk, this is my first automatic, have always owned Manuals since driving back in 1998. All I know is it's been a terrible experience since day 1, and if this is what automatics do, I'll never own another one. (my 2018 4Runner Pro I got my fiance doesn't have this issue though. Actually, has no issues at all)

Don't compare the automatic Tacoma to other automatics. It's a totally different animal.

I said this in another thread-- I get into any other of my families vehicles (5 different ones), drive them around and I never even think about the shifting. It's seamless and works great. Don't even notice it, really. I get into my Tacoma, drive it around, and think "man, this shifting is garbage". Every single time. Today it just randomly surged and wouldn't down shift (yes, I have the latest 58-18 TSB). It's always something with this truck.

I just don't understand why they can't make this truck shift like every other vehicle on the planet.

That said, I've also got the "thump" when coming to a stop. Not always, and not just when cold. I haven't determined a pattern yet. Feels like someone rear ends me at about 2mph when I'm almost stopped.

Your explanation for the thump, exactly. It's not always when it's cold, but it always happens when it's cold. Of that makes sense. It does happen randomly when it's warmed up.

There was a crazy amount of 16 and 17 low mileage used tacomas on the lot today at the Dealership. Probably all w/the same issues we're having and got fed up with is, just as I am now.

Everyone who's having the issues should call Toyota themselves, and open a report on it. If they get enough reports, they'll be forced to do something about these problems. People are going to dealers, and the dealers are just blaming everything else, so no case reports are hitting Toyota, so they have no idea that there's such a large group of people w/the problems. :( . Your local Toyota dealer will have the number to call Toyota, or 1-800-322-3933 . (monday-friday only)

I don't think there's any question that these 3rd gens will hold resale value after 4-5 years like the 2nd gens did. I actually paid about $3k under MSRP for my 2018 brand new. Trade in value is like $3k under that. Crazy. That's about where my 2nd gen was at 35k miles and 3 years.

Just too many low mileage ones sitting on the used lots right now. And it's not just 2016's. Now we have 3 model years of them.

Locally, I'd never see used 2nd gens on my dealers lot. Maybe a couple once in awhile. Now there's like 10 third gens there all the time.

Agreed. You guys need to be opening cases with Corporate. You can do it before you even talk to the dealer. Call corporate and tell them your problem and have them open a case. Then reference the case when you talk to the dealer.

Yup, I didn't see any 2nd gens on the lot when I was there, but there were probably 6-8 used 16/17's on the lot. :( . I should have asked them what they were traded in for. Instead of speculating, maybe they traded them for the 19's w/the snorkel? :p

Too bad I dislike Ford so much. Looks really good, and the prices are definitely crazy competitive w/the Tacoma. 4cyl Turbo, 10Speed Tranny? Curious if they'll get it right the first time around, unlike the Automatics on the Tacomas. :(

I think a lot of people here feel similarly.

I'm guessing the 4cyl turbo will feel similar to the Tacoma at interstate hiway speeds. MPG's will seriously suffer with any load or headwind.

I hate to break up this second gen circle jerk, but I was just at the dealer and there were 6 second gens and 1 third gen. On the used car lot. Pricing for them was in line with what you'd expect. I get that you guys are frustrated, but the second gens, and the first gens were far from flawless as well.
    Business as usual for Toyota.
