Finally a fix from Toyota for Stumble condition (TSB 0062-18)

I felt the same way immediately after the flash - and I was quite impressed. By the end of the day of running errands, it started acting up again. Now in its 2nd week after the flash, it seems to shift a bit differently each time I start it up. Sometimes it shifts quite good, and other times not - OR maybe its just the landscape I am driving on(hills/no hills) - its hard to tell. It seems like I have to "baby" the pedal just to keep it from shifting too soon after 3rd gear - it seems to have a dead zone in acceleration right around 3rd/4th gear.

 

Ok, so this learning module - exactly what is its purpose? Is it suppose to learn our driving habits, and then adjust accordingly so that we are FORCED to drive for better MPG? If so, then if we drive by "feathering" the pedal during the learning period, then maybe it would actually give us better shifting points after the learning period?

 

I always drive easier on it (avg between 22-23mpg a tank) and well, it completely fixed my highway gear shifting issues, but it made my 40-50mph issues even worse, and didn't effect my 0mph-20mph stuttering issues under heavy throttle, or the random clunkin when coming to a stop. I've got the reject of the Tacomas I'm guessing.

 

I have over 1000 miles on the TSB and still pretty happy with how it is acting. Haven't noticed any degradation in driving or performance.

 

This ^. I have almost 1K miles on my update and I have NO issues that I can find. The learning process will not UNDO the update. Yes it may adapt somewhat but the update changed hard coded procedure such as Trans Lockup of the torque converter which is not going to be changed via AI. Watch your instant MPG meter if you don’t believe me. You can tell the converter is not locked now near as much allowing the converter to do its job. As it “stalls” it builds torque vs locking up which basically mates the engine to drivetrain 100% when too low of RPMs and you have no power.

 

Thanks for the info guys. It could vary from person to person, truck to truck and different landscapes like you mentioned penn84. I'm gonna hope for the best, because I sure do like how it drives now!

 

What do you mean by driving easier? I am afraid to be timid with the gas pedal because that is what it will learn and I will be stuck with driving like a granny for the duration of owning this truck, which might be a much shorter time span that any toy truck that I have owned because of this ish with the transmission. Late 2nd gens are looking better and better.

WTF is this learning thing supposed to do in the long run, anyway? Why can't these trucks just go? I know the answer is probably somewhere in that tome of a manual which I don't have time to read cover to cover, though it is beginning to seem like I need to take a damn class on this truck!

Nah. I drive pretty easily on the truck, and have consistently kept in the low/mid 20's for fuel mileage. When I do need the power though (passing gramma doing 45 in a 45) I slam my foot down and it comes right to life w/no issues at all. Once I pass, it goes right back to how I normally drive. When I first got it, I was ripping around all the time with it, but it made the shaking in the ass end when starting from 0mph way more noticeable, and fuel mileage stuck around 16mpg per tank. Since I've eased up, I don't notice the shake as much but it's still there, and as I said, getting low/mid 20's or fuel mileage. Best so far was 28mpg for a tank.

 

I wasn't referring to me doing speed limit or lower. I am always 5-10mph over the speed limit. I just don't rip into it everytime I accelerate. It's the only vehicle I've ever driven that punishes you heavily for driving incorrectly (with fuel mileage) but is good to you for driving casually. It goes mudding, on wheeling trails, hunting, minor rock crawling, down 4-wheeler trails, through a few streams/rivers here and there. I don't baby it, just don't beat on it.

 

I can' agree with that. The TSB improved on the stock tune but IMO not as good overall as the OVTune.

Agree with 1.05 being much improved over 1.04 and 1.04R based on Matt's updates.

 

My Tundra would get 15.5 mpg consistently commuting on backroads. Highway unloaded or light loads I've seen as good as 17.5, gas to gas. Towing a large popup with a cargo deck, loaded up about 3200-3500 lbs, bike in the bed, I would get 12-13. This is keeping speed to 70 max on Rt 80 across PA. My feeling with the big motor is that milage is more consistent. I would expect the Tacoma to do better unloaded commuting, as it does, but drop more when loaded. Thats why I switched, as most driving is unloaded or light duty. If I was hauling I'd stick to the big truck.

 

I have to agree. I have weeks on the update now and my MPG plus my impression of accelerator pedal response is significantly improved.

 

Can you confirm with a scanner that you have 400?

 

I've got some uphill to get home with the same downhill to town, and some very enthusiastic law enforcement that keep me close to 55mph once I hit the flat and level. I'm at exactly 15.5 mpg do date in the Tacoma. What are you seeing on your '18 Taco on the back roads, mpg? TSB, or no TSB?

 

I know I read this somewhere on here but can’t find it. So I’ll ask! Does TSB-0062-18 also fix the surge fix from TSB-0058-18? The surge is my main issue but stumble is also sort of a problem, but not as much as the surge. Thanks!

 

Just for clarification though; 1.05 is not out yet - correct? Do we know when it comes out? What are some of the improvements we can expect? Thanks!

 

Sorry, Ill need more information on that - is "400" (whatever that means) what I should of had before? or after? the flash.

 

400 is post flash on '16 and '17 models.

 

Two TSBs that cover multiple problems with the same end result. (same flash) pick the one most applicable to you.
