The current 4-banger and V6 offerings are cool, but what motor would YOU choose for the Tacoma?

Personally, I'd like to see the 4.6 V8 as an option for future Tacomas. It wouldn't be some crazy gas-chugging torque-beast of an engine, but more just something to bridge the gap between the 3.5 V6 and the Tundra's 5.7 V8.

Although I would not personally buy one, a diesel Tacoma could be a lot of fun, too. I could see it competing well against the Diesel GM trucks.

Even a turbo kit for the existing motors would be nice.

I'd like to see an an improved 4 cylinder. It seems that the one in it now hasn't changed much.

There is a turbo kit in the works for the third gen :burnrubber:
But there needs to be V8s but there won't be any in a 3rd gen. If there's any chance of the tacoma getting a v8, it'll be in the 4th gen since they don't want to piss off loyal tacoma owners who already bought a 3rd gen

This is a useless thread and it's only the fourth post.

I don’t think we’ll ever see an engine bigger than a v6 in the Tacoma. Toyota puts the v8 in the Tundra for a reason.

That being said a Turbodiesel would be nice, but will likely never happen considering the hoops Toyota has to go through with the EPA/CARB/SMOG people. The U.S. is the one of the only countries that doesn’t sell Toyota Diesel engines.

BTW none of the ENGINES mentioned or currently in use in Tacomas are motors. Motors are in Prius' though.

    Thanks for your valuable contribution.

I'd like to see the 4.6 or a turbo diesel engine. I don't think it would cannibalize their Tundra sales since the Tundra is such a different platform.

It seems to me that the 4 cylinder they offer now is somewhat underpowered for heaving around a modern pickup truck. It would be fine in a smaller, older pickup, but modern trucks are just huge compared to the old ones.

They put each generation of Tacoma to the test to see which one is faster. The 1st Gen won because of the weight to power ratio.

I agree. Most of the Tundras I see are 5.7s. I actually cannot recall the last time I saw one without the 5.7 badge on the side.

It seems like people view the 4.6 in the Tundra the same way they view the 4-cylinder in the Tacoma. While neither motor is especially impressive in their respective truck, the 4.6 in the Tacoma would be great.

What's interesting is the 2nd Gen blows away the 3rd Gen with less HP & Torque, and furthermore the 2nd Gen is an Off-Road model vs the 3rd Gen Sport model. Both 4 door models. That hood scoop must weigh a ton.... :D

Just turbo the 2.7 and make it outdo the numbers for the new 2.7 turbo in the new Silverado and it would be a fun truck for sure then.

If they could just put the five or six speed manual back behind the 4 banger it would be enough. I just don't want that 3.5l

I can probably get a good deal on a Triton V10 from a local junkyard. Oh, the torque.

That V10 is very underwhelming. But I have a feeling it's ability to make torque is mostly due to it's intake tract and it could probably make HP if anyone cared to improve that.
