If it stops throwing chips and throws more dust and burns the wood then it is time to sharpen. Also make sure to check the chain oil reservoir.

 

I sharpen mine any chance I get a rain day or free time. But using them on a daily basis causes you to not be able to stand a saw that’s not perfect lol. For a trail saw basically you sharpen it when you notice it’s not cutting good anymore. It wouldnt hurt to touch it up before a trip though, the five minutes of prep is worth not haveing trail delays due to a dull saw.

 

A chain saw is definitely the the type of tool that you just let do the work. You let it just work it's own way into or through the wood.

So when you start having to apply more pressure than usual or start rocking the bar back and forth to get it to cut easier. Especially when what your cutting is dead/soft, it's time to sharpen the chain.

Friend of mine in the Philippines had his entire corn crop wiped out from the latest super typhoon Mangkhut this Saturday. Made landfall at the equivalent Hurricane speed of a category 5

Mind you, this was hand planted corn covering many hectares.

Super Typhoon Mangkhut made landfall in the Philippines at the equivalent windspeed of a Category 5 Hurricane.

Hit my hometown this Saturday.

This is the house of my best friend in college.

 

Wow! Lloyd, that's devastating. We were following the news regarding this Typhoon because my wife is originally from the Philippines and her family still lives there. They live in Manila and did not experience the tragedy that the Filipino's in the province experienced. I hope your friend is safe and able to recover from this event.

 

Yeah. The typhoon’s path was right through northern Luzon, so it missed Manila by about 200 kilometers. They should have gotten some rain, but not the volumes experienced up north.

The track of the typhoon was up in the mountains of Cagayan, the Mountain Province and Isabella. I went to school in Baguio City, which was hit hard.

 

Yeah. Typhoon Mangkhut was about twice the size and wind speed of Hurricane Florence. Didn’t get a lot of news coverage because not local.

He and his partner were stone cold! And he wasn't going to bow out! A true warrior! That's when a good partner goes a long way. He had the tq on quick and continued to look out for his buddy. You could tell towards the end of the video his leg was going numb (sign of good tq application) because he was having a harder time moving it around. Partner noticed it too and made him go sit down..before it turned to complete rubber.

It is a very unique bond you get when you have to trust another person to watch your six and put your life in their hands on a regular basis. Up until my recent promotion I got the privilege of working side by side with my life long best friend. We went to high school together and have been friends for the better part of 20 years now. It was one of the hardest things to give up when I was reassigned!

 

That is terrible Lloyd!!! I heard it mentioned a handful of times on the local news. But very little coverage compared to Florence...I will keep your friend in my thoughts and prayers! Let us know if we can do anything to help him out!

Was a busy weekend around here. This happened Saturday here.

The fire burned to within about .5 miles of my house. (It got into a ravine that runs for east -> west directly adjacent to my neighborhood) For the first time ever we got a reverse 911 call telling us we were on pre-evacuation notice. It was 90 plus degrees here on Saturday with winds gusting over 50 mph...which could have been disastrous had it not been for the 30 plus engine companies that responded and the brave men and women that put themselves between the fire and homes! (1 firefighter and 4 officers were injured)

About 30 minutes from here there a 6000 people still evacuated due to the Pole Creek Fire! Air is so unhealthy they are just telling everyone to stay indoors. If I go outside for any length of time I get a headache and a sore throat.

 

Dam. The west fires are still
wreaking havoc.
