Anyone run 91/93 octane since performing the update?

I have in the past with very little improvement to quirkyness of the engine so haven't bothered since then... until this morning.

Seemed even better, stronger through 2000-4000 RPM. Could have been the cooler air this morning, could have been placebo, thought I'd put it out there. :notsure:

Interesting. Last December, I accidentally filled with 92. It initially felt better and smoother with an extra MPG or so on that first tank. After that, I thought that I would continue with a second tank to see if it was worth it. It seemed to feel like 87 and I lost an MPG over 87.

It might be worth trying 92 again for grins?

I believe that 92 needs a 2mpg jump to make it pay for itself at $0.30 more per gallon (current Costco prices $2.99 for 87 and $3.29 for 92).

I have to say, the more miles I put on my 2018 since the update, the less impressed I am with it. At first I thought it was an improvement, but the surge is still there and I feel it is every bit as present as before - maybe the ECU is learning and is going back to it's old ways. The shifts to 2nd and 3rd are still smoother and improved over the 4A7000 - that is a good thing. I live in Kansas, so it's really flat and I can't really say if the tune is any better going up steep inclines, but I am taking the truck to Colorado in a few weeks and will be able to see how it does.

I understand that engine tuning is all a compromise between fuel mileage, emissions, and driveability. Maybe I am overly sensitive, but honestly Toyota should be embarrassed at how bad this engine feels in the truck. Don't get me wrong, I still would buy this truck again as it does everything I need it to do (and has a manual transmission unlike most others on the market - a huge selling point for me). When I compare it to the 4.0L that was in my 2003 4Runner (which was criticized by many as being "rough"), my old 1992 Toyota Truck with a 22RE and 5-speed, or my wife's 2016 Accord Coup 6-speed - it just feels unrefined and very "un-Toyota like" with the shaking at idle when the AC is running, the surging/bogging, and fuel economy (it's gets 3MPG less than a Chevy Colorado that has more horsepower and greater towing capacity). I'm sure it is a challenge for Toyota to fix these issues without affecting the mileage or the emissions it was certified with, but I was really expecting more.

    Just one man's opinion...

91 pages. I was thinking it would be nice if we could get the OP to update the first post to point to the files, where to buy the tractrix cable, etc. I'm thinking of just going that route but I need to go through the pages again to get the right info!

Update for a transmission you shift? Confused, my 17 has 75k on it and it has no surging or stutter.

The update is actually an Engine update, that I believe how the ECU delivers power. This affects the shift points on the vehicle and makes it more linear. I noticed that more than the stutter change myself, but I did have a small one in 2nd that is basically gone now.

Mine was done by DCH Toyota of Oxnard,CA.
I've noticed less hesitation in second gear (not having to rev it up to 3000 rpms to get it to accelerate in second). But third gear Man! I finally can shift to third gear at about 2500 rpms and actually have pick up power! I also noticed that 6th gear is actually useful without having to be over 80 mph.
Definitely have seen increased fuel mileage. Very happy with the update.

After a pretty significant uphill battle with the shop foreman T Desert Toyota of Tucson, I got the update (04B11 -> 04B13) after agreeing to sign a liability waiver, paying for the fucking tune (luckily at the warranty rate of .4 hrs) at the tune of $54.

What a pain in the ass. The foreman must have really thought he’d be burned by what he must have figured may ‘brick’ my ECU.

I also had them check the rear diff for the leak, but my VIN didn’t qualify.

The oddity came when I asked for them to fix my clutch for the first time after 30K miles. One of the experienced mechanics put in my truck info and saw the tsb for it...put the parts on order and set up an appt to have them r&r’d next week...1.2 hours, and replaces most of the in-cab clutch system. Master cylinder and some parts of the linkage. All I thought would happen was a quick shot of lithium grease and I’d be sent on my way.

Initial impressions are certainly positive, but it isn’t all that impressive. The best part so far is I can let the clutch out in first gear and it doesn’t die instead of requiring I give it some throttle to keep it running. This will be GOLD off-roading.

    Stumble-spots are dramatically reduced.

Not sure on fuel consumption yet...need to put a tank through it to decide that one.

    Cheers guys and gals!!!

Sucks you had to deal with all that but it sounds like it was worth it! Just out of curiosity. What was wrong with your clutch?

I did the update 04B13 a month ago, like everyone that did it i was impressed by the smootness and power delivery. I was running on 91 before the update continued for two weeks after, then i switched to 87. Now the engine does a lot of detonation at moderate and high load from 1500 and 3500 rpm. Im gonna return to 91 octane but it sucks that i have to do this on a stock tune to operate smoothly. Starting to consider OV tune.

It’s just the clutch squeak/creek the vast majority of us deal with or typically fix ourselves.

Your luckier than me, my freaking foreman at findlay wouldn't do it even if they charged me. I offered to pay and sign a liability waiver, because I don't want to spend almost 200 for a tactrix. Findlay toyota refused to do it completely.

This update has become a HUGE pain for us manual transmission owners who are trying to avoid messing with the ECUs only because it is a brand new vehicle. I went to Westbury Toyota in Long Island, NY aka WTF (Westbury Toyota family). Their technician who deals with programming ECUs etc. agreed with me that there is a pending update for my truck however since the word "automatic" is mentioned in the TSB he can't apply it.
He was willing to help diagnose the issue though in order to build a case to potentially have a proper TSB for manuals. He attached Techstream to my truck and we drove around the neighborhood recording data. He did acknowledge the stumble/stutter problem in 2nd gear (manual) as I reproduced it for him several times. He will attempt to start a case with Toyota after he is able to replicate the stumble on another manual truck in their stock.

This is just a single drop, we need a wave, so it requires more noise from other manual owners out there. I am willing to take out time as needed for any future possibilities about a conference call to Toyota CORP or even a lawyer if we have to. I don't mind buying the cable and doing it myself but that doesn't fix the broken principal from Toyota's end. As per the service tech's words "sometimes Toyota just says this is a "normal" condition" & washes their hands away however if we team up their chances of getting by with just words are slim to none because there is an actual problem. I am not afraid to tune it myself but why should I be doing it?

Offtopic: I just tuned my Armada with Uprev/Osiris e-tune and it worked like a charm. It was much needed after putting JBA longtubes high flo cats and some other big upgrades. I have tuned my Camaro in the past with Trifecta EZ Flash. Seriously, though I don't know why technicians behind big CORP walls loose work ethics. I work as tech in a CORP environment too and blow the bells and whistles when needed.

Alright. Here is a wholesale instruction set. Credit to @mstrbrc , @Ruggybuggy , and others. If you folks like it and it seems complete, we can ask Ruggybuggy to update the OP with it.

    Update Instructions:

The TSB T-SB-0058-18 Rev 1 is attached.

Download and install TechStream on a Windows 7 or 10 computer:
    http://blog.obdii365.com/2017/05/09/toyota-techstreamv12-10-019-free-download/
You will need a program that can unzip .RAR files:

    -- Unzip and install TechStream
-- After the installation is complete, do NOT launch TS
    -- Go to this folder: c:\program files\toyota diagnostics\techstream\bin\
-- Replace the mainmenu.exe file with the one from the ZIP file
-- Now, you can launch TS
-- The key.txt file will be needed when prompted in TS for a password. Just open the key.txt file and copy and paste the contents.

That is a known, working version of TS for the 3rd Gens. This version will allow checking, monitoring, or customizing of 2016 and 2017 Tacos also. A later version is required for checking, monitoring, or customizing 2018s.

Download and install the drivers from Tactrix.com:
    https://www.tactrix.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=38&Itemid=61
The Tactrix unit can be purchased on Tactrix.com also. You just need the basic Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 unit. No extra Mitsubishi or Subaru reflash adapters. You will receive a Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 adapter with a miniUSB cable.

Before connecting to the Taco, plug the Tactrix cable into your computer to verify that the drivers recognize the cable. Open TS to test drive the program and pick the Tactrix connection from the drop down menu.

Attached are the CUW files for MT:

-- T-0033-18.cuw is for 2016 and 2017 Tacos with ECU IDs of 04B10, 04B11, and 04B12. Applying the update will give you 04B13.
-- T-0037-18.cuw is for 2018 Tacos with an ECU ID of 04B70. Applying the update will give you 04B71.

Place the one that is need for your Taco on the computer desktop.

    Use this checklist for updating:

:anonymous: Don’t use hacked versions of TechStream for an ECU update.

 Don’t use a virtual machine environment to do an ECU update.

 Don’t use Bluetooth or WiFi dongles for an ECU update (USB only).

 Do turn off Windows update service.

 Do turn off Windows system sleep functionality. Use the “always on” setting in power management pane.

 Do turn off USB power management for the USB port you’re using.

 Do plug the laptop into a wall outlet.

 Do hook up a battery maintainer to the vehicle during an ECU update.

 Do turn off all electrical consumers during ECU update.

    Open the hood.

Once you are ready to update your Taco do the following:

-- Key out of the ignition
-- Plug in the Tactrix to the OBDII port by your left knee
-- Double click on the CUW file on your desktop that applies to your Taco
    -- Follow the prompts exactly

    Enjoy!
