Hello All - I want to purchase a Tacoma 4X4 and after doing a little research about all of the different trims available with a Tacoma I am a bit confused about which would be best for me.

Mostly my truck would be on paved roads but I also want the ability to drive on snowy roads and also drive on dirt/gravel/rocky/washboard roads to get to trailheads for hiking or to lakes for kayaking.

I would eventually like to get a lite weight cab over camper to go on longer trips.

I'm brand new at this so any and all help is much appreciated.

I'm also new to forums so not sure which thread for my questions.

    Thanks!

TRD Pro - Fox suspension, crawl control, locking rear diff, better skids, better fog lights, 16" wheels, All terrain tires
TRD Off Road - locking rear diff, bilstein suspension, crawl control, 16" wheels, All terrain tires, black fender flares
TRD Sport - standard 4x4, no crawl control, 17" wheels, street tires, hood scoop, color matched fender flares
SR5 - standard 4x4, standard truck features, 16" wheels, street tires

Most find the TRD Off Road or TRD Sport to be the best value for the money.

So I too am new, just bought my 2018 DCSB OR not even a month ago. I live in FL but plan on doing mostly paved road and some off the beaten bath for fishing and hunting. I liked the options the OR had and the added suspension is nice even on paved road. esp with the speed bumps. For threads I read a lot from the 3rd gen section. They have a few sticky threads that are amazing. Esp the tips and tricks thread. I also recommend if you do buy one, to check the AC drain hose right away. In 3rd gen there is a sticky thread about it. Toyota didn't make the hose long enough and some people are noticing surface rust underneath but its a cheap and simple fix for us. Welcome and hope you enjoy which ever you buy!!!

While technically possible I don't think it is the best idea. For a variety of reasons I like a small, lightweight pull behind travel trailer a lot better. These little trucks pull trailers quite well. But they are very limited on how much weight you can carry inside, or on them. A travel trailer with 3X more room inside would be a lot easier on the truck. Plus you can unhitch and leave it at the campsite and not have to carry your home on your back when you are exploring from the campsite.

I just got my first Tacoma and selected a TRD OffRoad 4x4.
For where I would like to go, I felt like I needed CRAWL Control (CC) as safety assurance. I want to explore the desert and CC is supposed to get you out of sand (not so great in mud and snow I hear.) Double check this, but I would rule out needing CC if I wasnt expecting to be in sandy situations. If you have a big budget, CC cant hurt to have.

If you're on a very limited budget, the SR5 4x4 is a great platform to grow into. It is capable of getting you to the trailhead in those conditions. It doesnt sound like you need the suspension that comes on the TRD Pro, OR, or Sport. Should the day come, you always have the option of upgrading your suspension. I know I probably will give my truck a conservative upgrade when the time comes.

Let us know what you choose!!

I like the trailer idea - thanks for that. I would like the TRD Off Road if I can find one. If not, the SR5 4X4 sounds like a good idea to check out as well. What I didn't mention in my first post was that I'd like to buy used. Thinking 2nd gen. Either an Access Cab or Double Cab because the bed length doesn't really matter to me. More about the quality of the truck and the price point. Any years you might recommend?
