Old grill & lights in a 1999?

    1999 Black Tacoma SR5
    I have a '99 in okay shape, interested in doing some things to it, but not spending a whole lot. Willing to cut corners, DIY it, and generally lose resale value. I'm interested in putting either old pre-Tacoma, or '95 grill and lights in (the recessed ones) to give the front that boxier look. I've read lists of parts and supplies needed to do this properly. Can this be done "improperly" and still have my grill & lights all function, and sit securely in place? Help me before I get out the Tremclad and PL premium!
