Hi all. This is my first post here! I am on my third tacoma, and this is my first 3rd Gen! anway, i used cruise control for the first time today, and noticed how on even slight hills my truck wants to jump to around 3k rpm and hold it there. Even when i am on my way back down, or leveled out, the truck holds 3k rpm for a bit. I know this truck has a learning transmission from what i have read, so maybe this is normal. My truck only has 100 miles on it. Is this something that will go away on its own? Thanks!!

Nope this is something the 3rd gen is known for.. issues with transmission shifting a lot at speed. It is hard for truck to maintain speed in 5th or 6th gear when there is a slight headwind or incline...

Mine runs pretty well on cruise control. really helpful driving to work in the morning or on 95E and having old folks cut me off. Doesn't shift weirdly or anything. It could possibly be the shift issue some 3rd gen have or it could just be learning.

Normal, I just didnt use cruise control near the mountains, I'd rather let it slow down a bit than have the idiotic flare up.

Man thats crazy to see that this is normal. I figured it would be something that would go away after a few miles under its belt. No other car i have ever owned has done anything like this.

Nice to know ahead of time before I drive thru the hills in a few months. Luckily for me, Florida is rather flat like my ex. ;)

Get TSB 62-18 done and it will drive like a different truck. Mine is an absolute pleasure now.

100 miles is nothing. Most cars take hundreds to learn from my experience.

Agree with other posters on incline, headwind, etc.

Oh well. I guess I will have to try and live with it. Still love the truck.

Dont just live with it, be proactive. The problem is bad enough that you joined a forum just to ask about it. There is a Technical Service Bulletin that has been issued that relates to poor drivability on all 3rd gen Tacomas, go to the dealer and tell them exactly what you are experiencing and that you know about TSB 62-18. The more people that have this issue the better we will all be. Obviously someone at Toyota did a VERY poor job with the programming of the transmission.

My truck does exactly what yours does. Its absurd to think that its "supposed" to be this way because someone at Toyota designed it that way. Its not right. I can't avoid mountains, Im surrounded by them and drive up and down them daily. Having my cruise control keep the truck at high RPMs for extended time when going DOWN a mountain is not ok. Ive got 1500 miles on my truck and will be taking it into the dealer this week for this exact same problem to be looked at. Thankfully the dealer I bought from has a very cool service staff with a service manager that is part of the aftermarket community and listens to enthusiasts who know when their truck has an issue. Find a service employee like that in your area and get your truck fixed!
