ok, so the skid (if it doesn’t have access panel) still has to come off. Thanks for confirming

I just hit 30k miles on my 2017 TRD Off Road. I haven’t done any off roading so should I even worry about replacing the differential fluid?

I would follow Toyota's recommended schedule which is 30k. Its really easy to change and the only thing that really sucks is the smell of gear oil and the cost of new gear oil.

I drained some in a metal pot. I washed it a million times, but the smell never went away.

I ordered my diff and manual tranny oil. I'm a little over 5,000 miles. Seeing as I'm planning on keeping this truck for a long time, I feel it's worth the money.

Yes. Follow the Maintenance schedule. Especially the first time. I think you might be surprised when you unscrew the drain plug how much crap is stuck to the magnet. Plus it good to flush out any contamination or metal pieces possibly occurring during assembly or initial break in.

How often does diff oil need to be changed? I only see a severe duty interval listed, or am I just missing it?

Just wanted to thank the OP and all contributors for the information on this thread. Did my first out of warranty oil change, front and rear diff oil, and front brake job today. Holy sh*t on the rear diff drain plug....

42k. Rotors were warped at around 15k miles, and the dealer resurfaced instead of replacing. Towed ~4000lbs up in the mountains and back the other weekend and felt the warp pretty bad as the brakes heated up. Have read conflicting things on why, I’ve never had rotors warp on any other vehicle I’ve owned so I’m reluctant to say it was driving habits. Either way, I’ll be towing again in a month so it was time. Pads still had a little over half life left when I pulled them.

Rear diff bolts don’t get easier - I’m not sure if it’s the vacuum from the temperature differential inside the diff or what. I just did my 30k change (changed at 10k myself and torqued to spec) and it was still a bitch.
